So you moved to Shanghai and your once buxom body and rippled abs are currently slathered in a filmy sheath of lard. It happens to the best of us. Consider the milieu: pedestrian-hazardous sidewalks, dim sum, Paul's, cement-mixer shooters. It's no wonder your natural complacency has evolved into a staunch refusal to leave the apartment thus resulting in...cellulite city.

Rock hard buns: you want them. If you'd prefer not to join a gym where the already beautified will stare at your tortured grimaces with a mixture of pathos and glee, try purchasing equipment to be used in the privacy of your own home or outdoors where no one's looking at you anyway. You'll also save on the c-notes.

SmartShanghai sniffed out four destinations for equipment purchase. Consider all prices listed as "starting from."

Carrefour

As the paradise sublime that sells all things ever desired (nagging meaning-of-life question notwithstanding) Carrefour's wares do include sporting equipment. The fluorescent lit, Lysol scented floors give way to a small section reserved for sporting goods, which includes bicycles (300rmb), treadmills (2000rmb), tennis rackets (100rmb), roller blades, and almost portable step-ercize machines. It's a pitiful selection. Basically, the store has one of each type of machine - the Jinqiao branch was the least comprehensive incarnation. As long as you're out in Pudong or Gubei, just head over to Decathlon.

Decathlon

Ahhh. The sporting goods store of Ancient Greek champions. This chain dedicated solely to sports and fitness is the place to go if you think you'd like to get fit but haven't decided on the means. Bicycles start at 700rmb, roller blades (300rmb) gym-worthy treadmills (6000rmb), stationary bikes (2000rmb), elliptical machines (1100rmb), skateboards (100rmb), snorkeling set (40rmb). Free weights, weight sets, boxing gloves, punching bags, camping gear, Judo suits, fishing rods, golf bags & clubs and, for your garage, a 2200rmb basketball hoop. Decathlon also sells sneakers for your obscenely sized western feet: women's sizes up to 42 and men's up to 48.

Specialized

This highly...er...specialized store is strictly for bikers. So new they have yet to print name cards, Specialized rolled its goods all the way from the California hub to Jianguo Xi Lu banking on the biker enthusiasts in China. Catering to the expat salary, this gorgeous shop sells every conceivable bikery gadget and gismo to keep you clothed, watered and cycling in style be it down Huaihai Lu or some Bohdi mountain adventure. Of course, you can also purchase the full range of bicycles here such as mountain, speed and kid. Prices are high
