MP3 Monday: Abigail Washburn
By Jul 5, 2010 Nightlife

TELL EVERYONE

MP3 Monday is a weekly SmartShanghai column, serving up mp3s from bands living and making music in China (or coming to China, or thinking about coming to China, or whatever). Copyright holders: if you would like your song removed, please email us here, and we'll honor your request promptly.

This week we cast the spotlight on Abigail Washburn, a clawhammer banjo player and singer-songwriter from Illinois. She's already had a few shows in town recently at Glamour Bar and the US Pavilion, and this Sunday she rounds out her Shanghai trip with a show at Yuyintang.

Abigail does old-timey Americana / bluegrass music, with significant ties to China, actually, and she's been touring here since 1996. She does songs in Mandarin as well. In addition to bar shows, she's also done a lot of cultural exchange-type concerts all over the country at primary schools and things, plucking and twanging for the kids.

Back in the States though, she's a well-known fixture in the roots music circuit, with her first solo album, Song of the Traveling Daughter (2005), and her follow up, Abigail Washburn & The Sparrow Quartet (2008), produced by banjo player extraordinaire, Bela Fleck.

For her latest solo record, City of Refuge she's working with Tucker Martine, a composer / producer whose credits include Spoon, R.E.M., and Sufjan Stevens, among others. That one's planned for an August 31 release, on Foreign Children Records. Here's a preview of that record.

So here's some songs. That first one is off the aforementioned Abigail Washburn & The Sparrow Quartet disc.

Abigail Washburn is performing with some musical friends this Sunday at Yuyintang. Now, that's the same night as the World Cup finals, but World Cup fans, the match is scheduled to start at 2:30am, so you can check out the show before watching the big game. Also, Yuyintang has a pretty big TV outside in their back garden there, so you don't even have to go anywhere after the concert.

Check out more on Abigail at her homepage right here. Here's the link to her complete discography, and there's links on that page to order these songs and more.
