MP3 Monday: Babylon Calling with Uprooted Sunshine

MP3 Monday is a weekly SmartShanghai column, serving up mp3s from bands living and making music in China (or coming to China, or thinking about coming to China, or whatever). Copyright holders: if you would like your song removed, please email us here, and we'll honor your request promptly.

It’s a big week for Shanghai’s reggae fans: Uprooted Sunshine is celebrating its seven-year anniversary this Friday at le Shelter. In conjunction with party they are releasing a mix album of original content from the crew and have given Mp3 Monday exclusive rights to share it with you. They released a CD a couple of years ago of original material recorded by Uprooted members but it's been unavailable for a while, so they've given us all the old tracks to give away here for nothing. Much respect. One of the most exciting aspects is the return of MCs Esia and Arminda who moved on to greener pastures a year ago. So, let’s start out with a few tracks from them. Before listening, head down to Yongfu Lu and meet up with my Xinjiang friends for some proper spices.

To further prepare you for Friday, check out the new café 2nd Floor on Wednesday for a free showing of the Uprooted Sunshine and Clive Chin China Tour Documentary at 8pm. Clive Chin is a Chinese-Jamaican producer and the son of Vincent Chin, founder of Randy's Records. Reggae is not my first love, however I got a chance to see the Hong Kong, Guangzhou and Shanghai shows of the tour and was impressed with how Clive Chin connected with the audience. Chin put out a 10” record from Uprooted Sunshine’s own ChaCha. Pick it up in stores. For now, let’s listen to some ChaCha tracks from that exclusive mix album…

Damn, seven years is no joke. Their first performance as Uprooted was at C’s bar in 2005 followed by the Shanghai by Bus party in 2006 at Blue Ice Cube (now known as The Shelter). Shanghai is a much better place with these kids around so go out and support them this week. To wrap us up and rewind, here are some tracks from one of founding members, Didje, who is also part of the group Original Fools, followed by a track from the whole crew combined. Happy anniversary kids!

This column is written by DJ Sacco, who runs Uptown Records, Shanghai's dedicated vinyl shop. Ironically, they don't sell Mp3s or dabble in anything digital, instead they have 7" and 12", EPs and LPs from rock to electronic, rare pressings, DJ equipment and band merchandise. Find them in an old bomb shelter at 115 Pingwu Lu.
