MP3 Monday: Friend or Foe, Mini Train Heart
By Morgan Short, Nov 7th, 2011 | In Nightlife
MP3 Monday is a weekly SmartShanghai column, serving up mp3s from bands living and making music in China (or coming to China, or thinking about coming to China, or whatever). Copyright holders: if you would like your song removed, please email us here, and we'll honor your request promptly.
Here’s two out of the many that sound rad to the max.

Kind of a big night on Thursday night in Shanghai, as ruminating, art noise, industrial stomp band, HEALTH is in town, raising awareness for Converse shoes with a free show at Shanhai. To get tickets to that, you were supposed to sign up for something online or go to a Converse store and ask for them. We hear there’s not many left. We’ll try to find out on that later today. Watch the “SmSh Wire”. They're touring China with some Beijing bands called RE-Tros and White+. Never heard of them.
Here’s a HEALTH track -- get religion. If you managed to get tickets, congrats.
If not, ehhh… I dunno, man.
Anyways, the HEALTH thing starts early, 7pm, and should finish early enough for you to get over to Yuyintang to catch the third Wooozy Session, featuring Wuhan indie rock / post punk band, Mini Train Heart. These “Wooozy Sessions” are a concert series hosted by Chinese-language music website, Wooozy.cn to bring in new bands to Shanghai that are good and interesting, but might not have the funds and the means to get themselves here themselves. Although it’s the major hub for live music outside of Beijing and Shanghai, it’s actually pretty rare that a Wuhan band makes it out of that city, so this is a pretty special thing -- and it’s an even rarer thing to hear a Wuhan band not doing the punk rock (‘tis the city SMZB built, after all). Here’s some tracks from Mini Train Heart. Seems worth it.

Local hard rock three-piece, Friend or Foe kick out their first CD this Saturday night at Yuyintang. This one comes at the end of a fair amount of well-deserved anticipation, representing as it does, the combined efforts of a couple of usually disparate Shanghai music communities -- namely, the house music people, who usually stick to the clubs, and the rock music people, who usually stick to… um… Yuyintang. The producers for this one are Acid Pony Club, a popular DJ / producer duo who you’ve probably seen around town at various clubs, dishing out dirty, sex-damaged house music and slutty disco. These days, the Ponies have scaled-back their own DJ shows to concentrate on their own original productions which have received vinyl releases in Europe and the States. They’ve also probably just realized the following truism: DJing kind of blows.
Anyways, they were at the helm for Friend or Foe’s album, in charge of translating one of Shanghai’s better live shows into recorded format -- not an easy task. How does one capture partial and sometimes almost entire nudity to CD? Just how does one go about turning up the cock in the final mix? More cowbell?
Also, with some input in terms of “arrangements” is Nichols of Rainbow Danger Club and newer, two-piece, time signature bandits, Death to Giants. Not too sure what “arranging” something means, but it sounds pretty Beethoven. Awesome. And then their CD art / comic is by Yivan of Moon Tyrant and Death to Giants as well.
That’s a lot of great and talented Shanghai people getting together under one banner, which is “My Claw is Never Limp”, the first CD from Friend or Foe, released this Saturday at Yuyintang. Here’s a preview track. You need to go to this show. It’ll be real good and fun. I know I say that shit every week, but this time I’m being for real. Big line-up: Rainbow Danger Club, Death to Giants, Heatwolves!, Acid Pony Brahs, and belles of the balls, Friend or Foe themselves. Cool, cool, cool.
Friend or Foe, album release, "My Claw is Never Limp" at Yuyintang this Saturday. Support: Rainbow Danger Club, Death to Giants, Heatwolves, Acid Pony Club. Starts 10pm.
