MP3 Monday is a weekly SmartShanghai column, serving up mp3s from bands living and making music in China (or coming to China, or thinking about coming to China, or whatever). Copyright holders: if you would like your song removed, please email us here, and we'll honor your request promptly.

Greetings, boils and gouls! For this week’s fiendishly festering feast of MP3s, we’re looking at Saturday night’s rock ‘n’ roll events! Tune in, turn it up, and drop DEAD, kiddies! Allow me to be your master of SCARE-i-monies! Bahwhhhahwaaahaha…***
Crypt Keeper, yo!
Crypt Keeper? Anyone? Tales from the Crypt? Anyone?
Sigh... yeah. So Saturday night is basically the big night for Halloween in Shanghai, and although there’s parties galore, you’re basically looking at two options if you want to see some bands and partake in a little rockin’ out. Here’s what they are:
Yuyintang: Halloween Tribute Show

Organized by Dan Shapiro of The Fever Machine, the yearly Halloween Tribute Show is a bunch of local bands taking it way too serious, putting on a night of tribute performances of various canonical rock ‘n’ roll acts. This is like the third or fourth one, and previous incarnations had on local bands doing The Clash, KISS, Wham!, Misfits, Sex Pistols, Ramones, Violent Femmes, and more. It’s a proud tradition. Gets a bit insane. Gets a bit silly. Gets a bit serious. Especially for people who want to see Wham! with verisimilitude and not interpretative Wham!
For this year, you’ve got four tribute bands on tap: Metallica, Dead Kennedys, Twisted Sister, and Velvet Underground. Expect the yearly clash of expectations between people turning up to get drunk and silly, and people judging whether the dude from that band is playing the guitar solo of “Master of Puppets” right. Fun! Here’s some of the originals to get you in the adjudicating spirit. Hope Lars Ulrichkt doesn’t have this website book-marked.
Halloween Tribute Show is this Saturday night at Yuyintang. Cover is 40rmb. Starts 9pm. Line-up from first to last: Twisted Sister, Velvet Underground, Dead Kennedys, Metallica.
Shanhai: Pipe Dream Princess + Old Fashion Halloween Party

Meanwhile, across town at the new live house, Shanhai they’ve got a double booked night with two shows and alas… two entry fees. First show is from 9pm to 11pm, featuring newly reunited Qingdao art rock band, Pipe Dream Princess. Opening for them is Shanghai’s Duck Fight Goose, who are, incidentally, on their way to SXSW this year. Good stuff. Points for the home team. This one might not be all that Halloweenish per se, but still worth checking out. Two scoops of artiness.
And then after that is Shanhai’s Halloween party proper, starting at 11pm, combing live bands and DJs. Live music is from local grunge band, Must Be Red, and they’ve also got DJs playing dubstep, electro, and DnB… live DnB, no less, coming from Sub Stance. Sounds scary. That one runs to 4am, which is pretty late for the rock kids. Costumes, I would think, more than welcome. Shanhai is pretty cheap drinks as well -- pints and mixed drinks, 30rmb. Read more about it here.
Pipe Dream Princess is Saturday night from 9pm to 11pm. Cover is 50rmb. And then after that is the Old Fashion Halloween Party from 11pm onwards. 80rmb for guys; 40rmb for girls -- includes a drink.
