MP3 Monday: Laura and The Fuzz
By Morgan Short, Nov 21st, 2011 | In Nightlife
MP3 Monday is a weekly SmartShanghai column, serving up mp3s from bands living and making music in China (or coming to China, or thinking about coming to China, or whatever). Copyright holders: if you would like your song removed, please email us here, and we'll honor your request promptly.
A few random live music matters for your attention this week. Sort of sliding over the finish line here into December, during which time there’s a bunch of music stuff which will be rammed down your throat with necessary vigour. Expect the hard sell on this Booshkabaash, The Shelter anniversary, MESH 2, the Split Works Anniversary (more on that below), and more…
This weekend, though, here’s two for thought:

For their first event after throwing it all against the wall for the Black Rabbit Festival, local promoters Split Works are hosting in Dutch singer / songwriter, Laura Jansen for a show Friday night at Yuyintang. Twee, foible-ous indie piano pop music. She’s performing in Shanghai as a three-piece, with bass and drums accompaniment. Here’s her big hit, which is actually a cover of a Kings of Leon song. Kind of sounds like Dr. Greg House M.D., looking out a rainy window, rolling a bottle of vicodin in his fingers, trying to come to terms with the loss of a patient that he just… Couldn’t. Save. He seems like he doesn’t care but really he just cares too much, my friends. Credits. Emmy.
And here’s a remix from fellow Dutch person Armin Van Buuren, who -- quite correctly -- felt the need to amp up the emotional urgency on this tune with a big swooshy build-up and then DROP at the 3 minute mark. Armin! Oh, the catharsis! The euphoria! The ecstasy!
Laura Jansen at Yuyintang this Friday. Tickets are available at the door on the night of the show -- 50rmb for students; 80rmb for olds. Starts 9pm.
After this show, Split Works are celebrating their five-year anniversary with concerts at multiple venues during the first weekend of December. More on that in the coming weeks, but here’s two acts out of the several you should familiarize yourself with: Chad Valley, Eat Alien Brain.

And on the next night at somewhat the opposite end of the spectrum, The Fuzz, an electro rock / dance rock band from Xi’an coming in to play Shanghai for the first time. This is what they sound like.
They’re touring around China behind their latest CD, Bomb Your Brain, out on Chinese punk / pop punk label, Scream.
The Fuzz play Yuyintang on Saturday night. 40rmb to get it. Starts 9pm.
-Local bands getting together for the annual Rocksgiving Charity show organized by your friends at BEAN. That's this Thursday night. Head on down to Yuyintang and support a great group of people, raising money for great causes.
-Soul II Soul Soundsystem. Also this Thursday. Get tickets.
-Local space rock masters of the universe, Duck Fight Goose are releasing their latest full-length album, Sports, on December 16 with a show at Yuyintang. Absolutely no relation to the Huey Lewis and the News record of the same name. Serious. Here is what the DFG cover image looks like. Warning: it’s real gnarly. That one was recorded at Juju and mastered by “LV” -- the guy who works at the Post Tape recording studio at Juju who is “not the skinny one”. He’s apparently going to be working on some SKSA and 8 Eye Spy records in the future…
-Tickets for French turntabalists Birdy Nam Nam are going fast. It's this Saturday at Shanhai. You want to go to this thing? You better order now-ish. Almost sold out.
-Mogwai. This concert is a week from today. Pre-sale tickets are sold out. 350 door tickets up for grabs on the night of the show. Box office opens at 8pm. First band, Wang Wen, on at 8:30pm.
