MP3 Monday: Music Round-UP
By Morgan Short, Sep 26th, 2011 | In Nightlife

MP3 Monday is a weekly SmartShanghai column, serving up mp3s from bands living and making music in China (or coming to China, or thinking about coming to China, or whatever). Copyright holders: if you would like your song removed, please email us here, and we'll honor your request promptly.
Bunch of stuff going on in your immediate vicinity and some other places in the next little while. Here’s a random assortment of things you should get in with if you want.
First, a little reminder: DJ Shadow is this weekend in Shanghai. He’s at the Mixing Room with local DJs Cavia and Ceezy supporting. Tickets are 200rmb pre-sale versus 300rmb at the door. Click here to order.
Ticketing for that closes Thursday afternoon, so you’ve still got a few days to decide on that one.
Incidentally, after this show in Shanghai, DJ Shadow moves on the play an electronic festival in Chengdu called the Panda Festival on October 2. If you were getting out of Shanghai for the holidays and haven’t checked Chendgu off your list that’s a good time to go. Go see Mr. Shadow; go see some for real pandas. Here’s the line-up and details. Sounds pretty neat-o. There’s another rock festival in Chengdu as well, with the usual suspects -- check that out.
Cheating Sons in Shanghai

And now for something somewhat different. Singaporean Americana /roots / nu folk band, Cheating Sons are in town for three shows this week before moving on to some music festivals as well. Pretty neat stuff. Americana, my friends. Majestic, earthy Americana folk rock coming in from Singapore of all places. We don’t get much of this sort of thing in Shanghai, so make sure you make it to one of their shows.
Here’s a country doo-wop, gospel-ish number off a release intended to spread the word about some hard up dolphins being held at Resorts World in Singapore. Click here for more info on that. Bummer.
And click here for the bandcamp of their January 2011 release “Masters, Wives, Daughter”. 10 re-fried country rock greats. Beardcore at it's finest. Worth a click that one, serious.
Cheating Sons are at Yuyintang on Wednesday night (with Fever Machine), Anar for Thursday night, and Lune for Saturday night.
Modern Sky Festival in Zhenjiang

Not in Shanghai, no, but close enough, and featuring enough Shanghai talent so that if you go, you’re bound to see some familiar faces. Brought to you by Beijing-based record label / festival promoters, Modern Sky, Modern Sky Festival in Zhenjiang features four days of music and more on four stages, running from October 2 to October 5. Exact location is Heron Island, in the middle of the Yangtze River, 15km’s from Zhenjiang.
Logistics-wise, you’re taking a Shanghai-to-Nanjing train and getting off in Zhenjiang, which is a couple hours away. Then probably camping on the festival grounds. To keep it simple, get on a train, then look for a big pack of metal dudes. Follow them. Do what they do.
Local bands to keep an eye out for: Rainbow Danger Club, The Fever Machine, Chaos Mind, Duck Fight Goose, Yuguo, and more. That’s a real good representation of Shanghai rock right there, all in one place.
And along with them is a slew of local DJs and producers as well. To name a few: R3, Drunk Monk, Blaise, Mau Mau, Shanghai_Ultra, Kamikaze, Zammo, Ssoso, Lin Feng, and many more.
Shanghai’s going to be a ghost town with all these names up in Zhenjiang -- you should seriously consider going if you’re not blasting a Full Moon party in Thailand or something wack like that.
Incidentally, the aforementioned act up there Cheating Sons are also on the Modern Sky bill, so if you miss them in Shanghai, you get another shot at it. Two of the main international acts are The Go! Team and The Whip (pictured). Here’s some songs from them. Dance, dance, dance.
Here’s the complete list of acts. Here’s the schedule they’re listed on. Here’s ticketing info.
Local Milestones

Moving on into the weekend-ish here’s two shows you should check out. Local “minority grunge” band -- as opposed to “hegemony grunge”? -- Androsace is celebrating one year of existence with a Thursday night show up at 696. If you haven’t had a chance to check out Shanghai’s most far-flung music venue, that’s a good chance to do so. They’re joined on the bill by Prank, another local grunge band. 696 is basically a little 10x10 room, so that one should be lots of fun. Lots of dirgey shit in your face and nowhere to hide. Details here.

And then the next night, this Friday, local two-piece samba / calypso combo, Pairs unleash their latest album on the world. Support is Hot Tom the Conquistador and his spring roll. That should be a night of good, clean fun. Don’t miss out.
Pairs’ disc is pay-what-you-want (read: free), but they’re setting up a nice little merch table of local bands’ output, so bring some of your hard earned cash to spread around like butter, and don’t forget to tell Pairs how they sound exactly like the Mars Volta. Like exactly. Details here.
