MP3 Monday: This Is the End

This Friday the zombies rise, the sky turns red and we all die, saving us the bother of Christmas shopping. So, a sound-track for the end of days.

MP3 Monday is a weekly SmartShanghai column, serving up mp3s from bands living and making music in China (or coming to China, or thinking about coming to China, or whatever). Copyright holders: if you would like your song removed, please email us here, and we'll honor your request promptly.

Let’s face it Shanghai, this Friday it’s all fucking over. As the Mayans say, it’s time to dance with the devil in the pale moon light. How’s it going to end? I’m thinking probably something along the lines of a Homeland episode involving Iran, stolen nuclear codes and Claire Danes. But that’s just me. Nuclear genocide is not everyone’s bag, so take your pick of crashing asteroids, earthquakes or solar-flares from the Sun, it’s all good.

So, you’re in Shanghai, it’s the last week of the human race on planet Earth, so let’s get a little playlist going to play us out. We’re going to start with a little punk / metal, then ease into a little melancholy rock.

If you’re anything like me, you’ll want to exit this world the same way you came into it, listening to Pitbull & P.Diddy. Well, that’s just what M1NT is promising and more at their end of the world party this Thursday. I don’t know this DJ Felli Fel character, but I’m thinking there is a slight chance he will play my favorite song ever: Britney Spears’ Till the World Ends so I’m going for sure.

Or how about spending your last night on Earth with a little rock’n’roll in the form of Beijing-based band Alpine Decline. The girl/boy rock team having been steaming up Beijing stages for the past couple years and their show on Friday is an album release for their new 12” vinyl pressing, Night of the Long Knives. Check out a couple of their tracks and I’m sure you’ll be thinking of Armageddon in no time.

This column is written by DJ Sacco, who runs Uptown Records, Shanghai's dedicated vinyl shop. Ironically, they don't sell Mp3s or dabble in anything digital, instead they have 7" and 12", EPs and LPs from rock to electronic, rare pressings, DJ equipment and band merchandise. Find them in an old bomb shelter at 115 Pingwu Lu.
