MP3 Monesday: Macanese Bass

By Morgan Short, Feb 9th, 2011 | In Nightlife

MP3 Monday is a weekly SmartShanghai column, serving up mp3s from bands living and making music in China (or coming to China, or thinking about coming to China, or whatever). Copyright holders: if you would like your song removed, please email us here, and we'll honor your request promptly.

Although we’re still rockin’ a sweet semi-buzz on baijui-scented burps, it’s back at work once again. For your Monesday downloads, we’re turning our attention to two producers from Macau, slated to be with us here in Shanghai this Saturday night.

Gotta plead ignorance when it comes to Macau. Never been. I hear they have lots of casinos. I also know that someone on that island, at one time, was going to pay Jean Claude Van Damme to have a real fight. That was supposed to happen last year. A for real kickboxing fight featuring -- for real -- Jean Claude Van Damme. Yeah, that’s a supernova of awesome. What a great idea. I can’t find any report that it actually happened but the thought alone will get me through the rest of the week.

Time Cop!

Anyways, here’s two producers from Macau playing music that I’m guessing doesn’t get them a lot of casino gigs: dubstep. They’re being invited in by Shanghai’s most active dubstep militia, Sub-Culture. The headliner, N1D, was in Shanghai in 2008, and has since then branched out into Hong Kong and Macau, pushing the bass music. This one’s got your metallic clunks and whirls, heavy on the atmospheric evil. More of a subtle thing.

Here’s his SoundCloud for more. N1D is joined on that bill by another Macau-based producer called Achun, who is going to be turning in a live set of dubstep-orientated noise/ electronica. This sounds quite like the shit. A guitarist for a band in Macao, his bio has him coming from post-punk, shoegaze terrain, into solo electronica production. This tune from Achun has some solid, distortion agro, and is great if you’re bummed to be back at work. Comes pretty direct.

So there you go. Two from the Macanese underground this weekend in Shanghai. Hitting you as hard as a Bloodsport-era Van Damme flying jump kick to the solar plexus.

Did you know Bloodsport is based on actual events?

Seriously. I shit you not. Wikipedia it.

And hey, Sub-Culture are doing their monthly screen-print poster giveaway. Click here for the details. That's the new blog which you should have book-marked anyways.

Sub-Culture pres. N1D and Achun this Saturday at The Shelter. Support from Sub-Culture crew. Cover is 40rmb.
