Shackleton Pre-View / IdleBeats Re-View
By Morgan Short, Nov 23rd, 2011 | In Nightlife

Shanghai’s most diligent platform for bass-orientated genres of dance music, Sub-Culture, is celebrating their anniversary this weekend with a Friday night appearance at The Shelter by Skull Disco big cheese, Shackleton. His show at the venue in 2010 was one of the stand-outs of the year, and this Friday is a pretty unmissable event if you’re into cerebral, off-kilter dubstep. That nebulous, mesmerizing, tribal, afrocentrism dubstep.
In anticipation of that, here’s some tracks to listen to. We actually got permission to put these ones on here as well, so listen and rip with a clean conscience, my friends. Doesn’t happen often.
Taken from the third Skull Disco release 'Soundboy's Nuts Get Ground Up Proper EP'. Tthis track was also remixed by Ricardo Villalobos on the 7th Skull Disco Release (2006).
Taken from the critically acclaimed Fabric live mix (2010).

Shackleton’s return appearance also marks an anniversary for Sub-Cultures collaboration with local design studio, IdleBeats. Every month throughout the year, Sub-Culture invited locally-based and international artists and graphic designers to design their event posters, and in collaboration with Nini Sum and IdleBeats, they silk-screened them up and made them available for purchase on the night. It's a really great idea, allowing artists from all over to showcase their talent, putting out their individualistic, idiosyncratic interpretations of the music. Better than just having some DJ sketch balls in sunglasses on there. If you managed to secure one of these things, you had a nice little memento of a good night (hopefully) and some nice art for your wall. Everybody’s a winner. We’re all winners!
Since April 2010, they’ve managed to collaborated on 20 different posters by 16 different artists from all over the world. Oh, what the hell -- here’s the big list of them all: Nini Sum (China), Gregor Koerting (Germany), Zeke Clough (UK), Cee (Germany), Xiao Long Hua (China), Cheeri Wang (China), TwoQee (China), JP Cuison (Philippines), Clemens Reinecke (Germany), Thun Puchpen (Thailand), Dan Nguyen (USA/Vietnam), Kim Laughton (UK), Popy Oil (Japan), Toru Harada (Japan), Tony Burhouse (UK), Chris Tomoya (Australia).
SmartShanghai got in touch with the two proprietors of Idle Beats -- Nini Sum and Gregor Koerting -- and asked them to pick three of their favorites from over the series. Click on the gallery below to have a look at which ones they liked the most and why.

So Shackleton is this Friday at The Shelter. Starts 10pm. 60rmb to get in. And that’s part one of the Sub-Culture Anniversary Events. Part 2 is on December 10, with Hyperdub’s Kode9 returning to the venue, getting all academic on the decks on December 10. So look out for that one as well.
Quick note on that Kode9 show on December 10. The line-up includes local producer / DJ R3 doing a live electronics set from 9pm prompt. Lights out and there’s some sort of video thing, accompanying that. And then right at 10pm, Kode9 is going to jump on a do an hour-long set of nothing but Burial’s music. And then he’s on again later on in the night. So special Burial set earlier on, FYI.

For more on IdleBeats, check out their webpage right here. They're also doing a Screen Prints Art Show and Holiday Sale at The Foundry on December 10.
