SmartShanghai version 5.0 is now up and running (well, most of it) so welcome! Have a look around at all our new content, layout, navigation, features, bells, and whistles. Portions of the website are still undergoing construction -- the dating and housing sections for example -- and are available in the version 4.0 format.

The general idea behind this new version of SmartShanghai is to give space to the additional content on the site, straying away from a blog-type layout, into more of a general webzine layout. We're also looking to branch out in terms of identity away from being considered a "nightlife website" into a more comprehensive social and cultural webzine - hence the lack of exploding hot pink (for now).

Although we endeavour to continue providing all the editorial and listings information you'll need regarding nightlife in the city, we also hope to offer the content and listings you'll be looking with respect to the other facets of life in Shanghai.

New Features:

Browse / Advanced Search: Version 5.0 has increased and varied browsing options in several areas of the website, and a new "Advanced Search" feature.

Maps: Version 5.0 offers different map options, including an updated metro map, a Happy Hour listings map, a Hotels map, and more.

The Wire: We've added a content feature called "The Wire" to the main page. This is a mini-blog of sorts, updated several times a day with the latest info on Shanghai cultural happenings.

The Essential Guides: For version 5.0, the editorial staff of SmartShanghai has begun compiling city guide information offering introductions to the cultural landscape of Shanghai for visitors. These "Essential Guides" (located in the main toolbar) are updated frequently and maintained by the editorial staff to offer the latest and most accurate information.

Events Listings: We've changed the way we list events. Rather than split it into the three tabs, "Upcoming, Weekly, and Ongoing," we've grouped them together and enabled the user to browse however they want to see them -- daily, by venue, by feature, and more. We've also qualified the event choices of the editorial staff in the categories of nightlife, art, and dining.

Best of Shanghai: As much as we adore our own opinions, this time around SmartShanghai decided to give the readers a section all to themselves. "Best of Shanghai" reveals the top four restaurants, cafes, clubs and bars as chosen by the people of this fine city. We promise never to tinker with statistics, so listings are totally authentic, generated by your peers. Whether or not you trust your peers isn't our problem.

User Reviews: For version 5.0, we've tried to encourage user reviews of venues in Shanghai, and have added a star rating system. Also, the editorial team chooses the best user reviews to appear on the main page.

There are other small changes here and there (AskMatsume got quite a facelift), and we hope you like the new look at features.

Thanks,
SmSh
