[My Weekender] - Magnus Akesson

The Dragon secret with Magnus - Oct 31, 08

Magnus is the Supper Club Manager at LAN Club, has been in Shanghai for three years. He's "usually looking for quiet evenings but seems to end up going out too late or too early (depending on what time you usually wake up)."

So, where do I start...

The typical Shanghai weekend usually starts on Wednesday for me. This week we are soft opening the LAN Tapas restaurant on the first floor, so I will pretty much be busy with that on Wednesday. After we are finished I will have my weekend starter drink: a Black Russian. I prefer places where I can talk to my friends so I will stay around the lounge area having a drink with some of them while planning our next move. I would say it would involves somewhere on the Bund, as it's so close.

This Thursday, we're doing a whiskey tasting for twenty of our VIP's. Whiskey representatives will be joining us to teach the staff, the VIP's, and myself more about whiskey. I'm looking forward to it, because it's a great way to learn more and give something back to our customers.

Friday will again start in the lounge for a drink with friends and customers, and around 1am-ish, I'll walk over to Lounge18 to meet up with my girlfriend and friends. I will most likely end up shuffling between different tables with different crews (you know who you are). My Irish/Mexican friends will be at one, along with the Vodka they drink. If the mood is right (aka I'm drunk and having a good time), I'll go over to Dragon Club around 2:30am to listen to the lounge music and watch people arriving. DJ Baru always delivers the latest in house and Mik in hip hop. The trick with Dragon is going there a bit earlier when they play lounge music. That way, you can still chat for a while. When it starts to get too crowded, I start planning my way back home. 4:30am is my rule for leaving. At 4:30am I'll tell myself "I gotta go." At 4:45am, "I really gotta go". And at 5am, I will leave and get some sleep.

Saturday, I will naturally be a bit hung over so nothing too crazy is planned. No cocktails, or any form of alcohol for today. I'll stay around and talk to friends in the lounge before heading back home.

Sunday, I'll get up and cook a deluxe breakfast, and if the weather is nice I will for the twentieth time try to get my ^%$ ass of the sofa and climb the Lupu Bridge.

After that I will head over to Taikang Lu for lunch at Origin before going over to the fabric market to make some new suits and shirts. Depending on my food cravings I will then head over to Maya or go for dumplings in Ding Tai Fung.

Stop by LAN Club for some food or a drink, update me on the latest news before heading out, and as we Swedes say: simma lugnt !
