If you're like me, you don't really give a shit about the music. These live rawk concerts... it's just an excuse to beat up on little kids in the mosh pit. It's how I enjoy myself. I get a little tween in my sights and then I just TAKE. HIM. OUT.
When I get tired I like to hang back on the perimeter the pit and forcibly shove anyone who comes near me back into the center of it. Yep. I'm the concert dick. Here's where IĄŻll be this weekend after sucking back a few Buds at my place, looking for YOU.

The Molds + The Rogue Transmission + Loudspeaker @ Yuyintang
Yuyintang hosts The Molds for the first of their two shows in Shanghai. Lots of chatter about what this band "sounds like," but I'm more interested in the singer's hair. Basically, it looks like Lyle Lovett's gigantic bouffant, which I have to say is really impressive for an Asian man to pull off. They're joined by local roustabouts The Rogue Transmission in their last show of 2008, and skate punk band (although it's a bit more metal-ey these days) Loudspeaker.
Cover: 40rmb Starts 9pm.
Magnetic @ Anar
Magnetic are the house band Wednesdays and Fridays at Anar. Haven't had the chance to check them out myself but some dude told me they were pretty good. Apparently, it's live dub, electronic-ey type stuff. Interesting.
No cover. Starts 9pm.
Saturday, November 29
SUBS + The Molds + Pink Berry @ Zhijiang Dream Factory
The big ticket of the weekend is the return of the SUBS who are back in town to destroy all in their path yet again. It's just getting so there isn't much left to destroy here in Shanghai after all these SUBS concerts. If you missed out or weren't die-hard enough to catch them at the super packed S.T.D. Halloween show, there should be adequate room for you at the spacious Dream Factory. They're joined by The Molds, doing a Shanghai one-two punch, and newish, local pop punk band Pink Berry.
Cover: 60rmb. Starts 9pm.
Milk@Coffee @ Yuyintang
Popular pop boy-girl duo Milk@Coffee will be playing at Yuyintang this Saturday as part of their national tour. Milk@Coffee do a twee sort of thing and are good if you're looking for something precious, delicate, impermanent, and poignant. Seriously. Check out some YouTube action
here,
here, and
here.
Cover: 50rmb. Starts 9pm.
Liu Ge Guo Wang @ Live Bar
Folk band Liu Ge Guo are on the MicroMu label, which is an "experimental, sponsor-driven, free-to-user record label model designed to discover new talent, create original music and reward artists in seemingly impossible conditions." Interesting. Check that out
here. Anyways, Liu Ge Guo Wang are Lanzhou-born, and Beijing-based, and do North western Chinese folk. Check out the band blog and sound samples
here.
Cover 30rmb. Starts 9pm
During the Week:
Wednesday, December 3: Jens Lekman @ JZ Club (Cover: 60rmb)
Thursday, December 4: Jens Lekman @ Glamour Bar (Cover: 100rmb + 1 free drink)
Don't forget about Jens like you forgot about Dre. (I don't know... whatever). Jens Lekman. Wistfulness incarnate. Fans of Belle and Sebastian and... the Juno soundtrack, don't miss out. It will be delightful. Two times.
Thursday, December 4: Corrupt Absolute (fmr. 88mm Overdose) @ Yuyintang
At the complete opposite end of the spectrum from Jens is Hawaii thrash metal band Corrupt Absolute, whom I hear are pretty much the only hardcore metal band in Hawaii. I guess there's not too much to be pissed about when you live in Hawaii. What are you going to write songs about? The nice weather, good surfing, and friendly people? Anyways, Corrupt Absolute have toured China twice before as 8mm Overdose and also shared the stage with Slayer. If you're looking for some speed metal, don't miss out. 'Tis a rare thing in Shanghai.
