MP3 Monday: March Madness

By Morgan Short, Feb 2nd, 2009 | In Nightlife

Local concert promoters Split Works have confirmed via press release that they're bringing over a couple non-sucky acts for March, which should make your life a little more pleasurable indeed.

The first name has been circulating a few weeks now, and has quickly been met with the response, "Serious? That would be pretty awesome if they came."

A four-piece out of New York, Battles is one of the most critically acclaimed bands of the 00's, giving boners to all sorts of music critics on both sides of the pond (NME, Pitchfork, Tiny Mix Tapes, etc.) for their experimental rock stylings.

Is he doing live vocal samples! Oh my!

Here is the track that got "Single of the Week" in NME:

Battles - Atlas

Battles points of interest: their drummer was in Helmet AND Tomahawk, so after the show, buy him a gin and tonic for that Betty album that rocked your ass off in like 1985, and ask him how Patton is doing.

Battles is coming to Beijing March 27 (Mao Live), and to Shanghai on March 28 (Zhijiang Dream Factory). They're joined by PK14. Sounds turbo sweet.

The next band slatted to come to Shanghai and Beijing in early March is snappy dressers and Oxford, England natives The Young Knives, who do that "post punk revivalist" thing that should find some very interested ears in the PRC. Sounding a bit Gang of Four-ey (they've got a single produced by Andy Mill), The Young Knives have played along with Hot Hot Heat and The Futureheads, and are pretty popular in the UK.

They also look like hobbits, which I find absolutely delightful.

Do you think we'll ever see the shire again, Mr. Frodo?

If you like the Kaiser Chiefs ("Oh, I prredict a Ry- ot!"), make sure you're around on Friday, March 6 for The Young Knives at the Zhijiang Dream Factory. Here is one of their singles from 2006 that charted in the UK.

The Young Knives ¨C Here Comes the Rumour Mill

And last but not least here is Paul Anka, simply dominating an Oasis classic, like only Paul Anka can. Ottawa represent.

Some other Battles points of interest:
-Ian Williams ! Great guitar samples...Remember Don Caballero's "What burns never returns" with also Damon "Octopus" Che.

-Seeing John Stanier smash his 2-meters-high crash cymbal..

-One of the other guys were playing in Lynx.

Interesting points, all of those.

And one of the guys is the son of free jazz giant Anthony Braxton

Amazing! I remember seeing the Young Knives play in the attic of some tiny old pub in Bristol (UK) during my last year at Uni. Good job, lads - I'll be there to support in March!
