[My Weekender] with Miss Amelia

Show 'em what you're working with - Apr 24, 09

Miss Amelia Kallman is an entertainer, director, and co-owner of the soon-to-be-opened "Gosney & Kallman's Chinatown". Shake it. Shake-shake-shake it.

My Weekend! I love a good Shanghai weekend -- the kind when you manage to fit a week's worth of events into 2 nights! This is one of those weekends!

I've been rehearsing my crew of lovely ladies and deviant gentleman of the CHINATOWN clan to perform at "Miss Behave 2" at 6 on the Bund, Friday night. For the first Miss Behave party we had some scandalous entertainment, pushing Shanghai's envelope if you will. This time we aim to surprise, and I have a feeling this will be another performance people will continue talking about for weeks to come! Can't wait to be performing these show-stopping numbers on a nightly basis when 'Gosney & Kallman's CHINATOWN' opens soon!

I suspect I'll be strutting around in a showgirl costume sipping champagne in the Dolce & Gabbana Martini bar after our performance, but if I'm up for it I might go and join some other friends to see the Ibiza Spirit show at M1NT again. So Saturday morning I'm looking forward to sleeping in.

I have a Traditional Chinese Medicine masseuse coming to my house at 2pm for my first 2 hour massage and .... Well, I'm not really sure. My girlfriends recommended this female TCM doctor to me as I have been complaining about the lack of relaxation I get from most massage here, though they warn me she can be quite intimate! Most of my experience with TCM has been quite life-altering, and since I'm on a bit of a health kick at the moment, I'm hoping this will relieve some Shanghai tension and ground me for the night ahead, which is a big one.

It will begin at 6pm with seeing an exhibit I've been looking forward to, the Korean Contemporary Art group show at the Andrew James Gallery at 39 Maoming Lu, just north of the Yanan. Jing and Andrew have a great eye and always have a fabulous opening, so this is a perfect way to start the evening. Then I've been invited along as a guest of a friend to attend the Brazil Carnival Party & BBQ at Art Lab at Moca. Always up for a good BBQ, hope the weather is as nice as it's been this week.

An event I've been looking forward to for awhile now is the Get on the Van III Party at the Zhijiang Dream Factory. I'm a big fan of The Rogue Transmission, not to mention Boys Climbing Ropes and DJ Sacco. Haven't been to a good rock show in awhile, so should be a fun time!

On Sunday's my plan is always to wake up and go to Tai Chi class at my gym, but it is at an unfortunate hour in the morning and more often than not I end up opting to stay in bed! Ayi comes at noon though, which is a good excuse to get up and go with my husband to Kevin's where we get a big slap-up breakfast, read the newspapers, do the crossword puzzles, and congratulate ourselves on a weekend well done. In the evening we are going to join some friends at The Factory for their dinner and a movie night. This week they are showing The Big Lebowski and serving dinner, all for 88rmb. A good way to spend a Sunday evening I think! Afterwards I'll look forward to coming home, playing cards with my love, reading my book, and getting a good nights sleep in preparation for the week ahead.

I would say Shanghai has some of the most exciting and unique weekends in the world. Whether you are just passing through or here for the long run, I congratulate you for making the right choice: Being here now in the center of the most happening city in the world!

I believe these are the good old days, and the best is yet to come!
