MP3 Monday: Andy C

By Morgan Short, May 4th, 2009 | In Nightlife

MP3 Monday is a weekly SmartShanghai column, serving up mp3s from bands living and making music in China (or coming to China, or thinking about coming to China, or whatever). Right click on the links and choose "Save Link As..." to download 'em. Click play to rock 'em.

We're disappointing fans of the rock today (both of you), featuring some music from immanent drum n bass DJ Andy C. Good to keep it eclectic, you know.

Andy C bears the exalted honor of being the only drum n' bass guy besides Goldie I've actually heard of (I don't get out much), and he's coming to Shanghai on May 15 for his first time in China, playing along side MC Lowqui.

Andy C boasts a long and storied career, dating back to the rave and pirate radio scene in the UK in the early '90s. His DJing career took off alongside the explosion of jungle music in the mid '90s, and his track "Valley of Shadows" (1993, RAM Records) is often cited as a watershed moment for the development of the genre.

Like a "Smells Like Teen Spirit" for the hedz.

Here it is:

Currently, Andy C is one of the most popular drum n bass DJs playing today, and he's the top ranked DJ playing in the genre in the Top 100 DJ list. Here's "Body Rock" released in 2002. Co-produced with Shimon, this track charted in the pop charts in the UK and is also considered a drum n bass classic:

Andy C is performing on May 15 in Shanghai with MC Lowqui as part of the ten year anniversary of Phreaktion. It's his first and only show in China, and if you like it thumping, it would be highly prudent of you to attend. It promises to be quite massive, with the throngs in attendance not only for Andy C, but also to play tribute to Siesta and Phreaktion for a triumphant decade-long drum n' bass assault on south east Asia.

Local superstar DJs and MCs will also be banging the gong for Phreaktion's ten years: Siesta, Viceroy, DrunkMonk, and MC's Chacha, Arminda, and Esia.

The show will take place at Zhijiang Dream Factory with door tickets 150rmb, and pre-sale tickets, available on SmartTicket, delivered to your door for 120rmb. Click here to order.

As a special bonus track, we've got one from skate punk band Brain Failure featuring Public Enemy's Chuck D. For real. Chuck D and Brain Failure.
