MP3 Monday: The Big Takeover

By Morgan Short, May 11th, 2009 | In Nightlife

MP3 Monday is a weekly SmartShanghai column, serving up mp3s from bands living and making music in China (or coming to China, or thinking about coming to China, or whatever). Right click on the links and choose "Save Link As..." to download 'em. Click play to rock 'em.

This weeks MP3s are from Saturday night's show at Yuyintang, featuring two Beijing-based hardcore punk acts Overdose and Fanzui Xiangfa. This show was at the tail end of a pretty full week at Yuyintang, (SUBS, Have Heart, and Ourself Beside Me), and also competing with some other concerts around town, so the attendance was a little lower than what would have been ideal for a hardcore show.

'Twas a lonely guy at the front there, doing that Hatebreed mating dance...

So although it was more subdued that you might expect, both bands were musically quite tight and awesome and so here's some MP3s of theirs for you to rotate to confirm their tightness and awesomeness.

Overdose is a streetpunk/hardcore band originally from Nanjing, newly relocated to Beijing. They've been in Shanghai twice before (I think) sharing a bill with NJ harcore-cum-psychobilly band Angry Jerks. Musically it's kinda neo, nu, new hardcore sounding, and if you like the big three of our generation -- The Unseen, The Casualties, Anti-Flag -- and stuff like that, this will be up your alley. In terms of a reference point in China, they'd fit right in on a bill with Demerit, also of Beijing.

The headlining act was Fanzui Xiangfa, who delivered a very purist first wave hardcore set, very rare in Shanghai. Their sound recalled the best elements of Minor Threat and Bad Brains, and if you like that D.C. era in hardcore, you should really watch out for this band in town again. I've got a Bad Brains song in there too because the whole time I was watching them I was reminded of the "Big Takeover" -- that guitar feedback as song intro thing. Nice one.

Bad Brains ¨C The Big Takeover

Hey aged punk rocker, don't forget that Sham 69 is playing in town this Sunday at Yuyintang. Although not nearly as well-known as their contemporaries (Sex Pistols, The Clash, and The Damned), Sham 69, if you don't know them, are quite central to the Oi punk rawk. Head on down if you're into real working class, anthem punk that makes a great soundtrack to caving peoples' heads in. Here is their most famous song:

Sham 69 ¨C The Kids are United

First encore? Second encore? Head on down this Sunday and find out!
