[My Weekender] with Vincent Schoofs

Lights, Camera, BOOOOM with Vincent Schoofs - May 15, 09

Vincent Schoofs was born and bred in Ghent, Belgium, followed by a few years in London, and now 5 years in the Whore of the Orient, “Pearl of the Orient.” He’s also the Sr Account Manager at Jetlag Productions, an occasional thrower of parties, and a spinner of psychedelicatessen as DJ Kodama with Magic Garden. His favorite food is fries with mayonnaise and beer, just to fit the stereotype.

First off, TFIF.

If there were an analog clock anywhere in sight, I’d be watching the seconds tick by till 6pm -- the official end of office hours. However, working in the alternative universe that is the "events industry", this notion sadly doesn’t exist and I’ll be burning through another hour or two of office work before heading on to work on the night.

Now to put it in the most subtle of terms, I just had a b*tch of a week: proposals, quotations, reviews... and planning my own extra-curricular activities -- (finally we get to the shameless self promotion) -- which this weekend will take the shape of the rave of the year. But this column isn’t called "my week," so let’s get on with it. When I do eventually get out of here, my first stop is home -- kiss the GF, pat the dog, check my PC to see what crap I’ve downloaded in the last few days, and sift through to find some decent new tracks. And what new tracks , you may ask? Come find out, I play from 3-5, this Saturday! My London mates better have sent me decent new choonage too, so I can at least tell the punter who’ll ask me what track I’m playing tomorrow, "it’s a white label mate, you know, unreleased yeah, innit" with credibility.

Yuta is flying in today from Tokyo to join Solaris, Dave K and myself tomorrow, so if time allows dinner will be一品居on Wulumuqi lu; best peanut sauce in town, wicked food, all round cheap and cheerful.

Loaded with some flyers and invites, I’ll join Kenny and the gang at YY’s for some Friday warm ups with a Duvel or three. Duvel is as close as we’ll ever get to ambrosia, and after you’ve had three or so, you’ll agree with me on that, or anything I say for that matter. On a sidenote, Kaiba "the Belgian Beer Bar" is two blocks down from my work and an absolute gem of a place.

Moving swiftly on, this particular Friday I need to check out Jane’s Andy C gig. She’s a stalwart in the scene and massive big ups to her for promoting the music she’s passionate about better and with more heart than pretty much any other promoter out there. Sure it will be a massive event, as it should be. If I still feel up for it considering the 24 hours of madness I have ahead of me tomorrow, I may go check out Gaz et all at The Shelter. As much as I love Anar I will need to give it a miss tonight as "just one drink" turns into seven and I hate stumbling out into the sunlight at 7 am when I didn’t bring my Ray Bans.

This particular Saturday will be start at noon, with the unloading of the truss and AV (6k rig, lasers, lights, you’ve read the party info) and setting up what we’ve worked our asses off on for the last month.

Had this not been the case, I would have slept in till some ungodly hour, ordered a Mediterranean Café Israeli Breakfast to enjoy in my little garden, caught up on some important DVD action and still not used my Wii Fit SK8, as I still haven’t gotten around to buying batteries for it. The evening could have been any combination of places around town, say Element Fresh for a bloody Mary, dinner there or at Southern Barbarian, more drinks at places too copious to mention, and I think I exceeded my word limit already.

My Sunday will be like most, except even more lethargic. One thing which must happen though is a massage at 璐璐(大拇指)盲人按摩. If I still have it in me go see Coco at JZ I will because it’s been a fair while now too.

And then when this weekend will draw to a close, as does this article, the eternal wisdom of Calvin and Hobbes always comes to mind:

"I can never enjoy Sundays because in the back of my mind I always know that I have to go to the school the next day. It’s like trying to enjoy your last meal before the execution."

Have a good one, should be a corker! BOOM d*;*b
