'Finish Him!': Cut&Paste Tourney
By Morgan Short, May 21st, 2009 | In Art

MORRRTRTAAALL KOOMBAATT!!!111!
This Saturday, the Cut&Paste Digital Designer tournament will set designer upon designer -- like ravenous dogs -- in a showdown of creative supremacy at the Shanghai Sculpture Space. No quarter asked. None given.
Cut&Paste is a galactically-transpiring, live design tournament featuring competitors in three categories: 2D Design, 3D Design, and Motion Design. They get a fixed amount of time to come up with something and their work is projected on these massive screens for the audience to watch. Some judges will judge the thing, victors will be crowned, losers derided, good times will be had by all. The whole shebang is hosted by MC Tang King and Vivian Tothill. Saucy beats by Kidplastik.
For betting purposes, SmartShanghai wanted to get a look at the contestants at this thing. Here's a random smattering, separated by competing category, along with a little biog action. Many more are competing and not featured herein (16 in all), and they're just as wonderful and talented as these. Good luck to everyone. Eye of the tiger! Take it over the top!

Steven Jong aka Jiang Yunsheng
Age: 26Fighting out of: Fushun, China
Dojo: iPart.cn
Website: www.jongart.cn
Steven fell into design by default. A less-than-stellar student in high school, his gaokao marks landed him in a technical school rather than a top university. He soon realized, however, that this was a blessing in disguise. ¡°I was lucky. I got exposed to art and design rather than just the dogma-like, technical know-how, like the star students. My degree is ¡®cheaper¡¯ than an university one, but it worked out much better.¡± In design school, he discovered a love of art that combines music and action, which is why, today, he works as an interactive designer.

The Cut&Paste Design Tournament is this Saturday, May 23. Doors are at 6:30pm, and it gets underway at 7pm. Tickets are 120rmb at the door (80rmb for students). That includes the competition and entry to the after-party at Yuyintang hosted by FREE THE WAX and featuring FREE THE ROBOTS -- not just a sterling electronic act, but also an ideo-political stance I think we can all get behind.
The official Cut&Paste site is here.
