MP3 Monday: DJ SIG
By Morgan Short, Jun 1st, 2009 | In Nightlife

MP3 Monday is a weekly SmartShanghai column, serving up mp3s from bands living and making music in China (or coming to China, or thinking about coming to China, or whatever). Right click on the links and choose "Save Link As..." to download 'em. Click play to rock 'em.
This week's em pea sans, we cast the spotlight on some young Chinese talent in the form of Qingdao-based abstract hip hop producer DJ SIG.
I guess we're just at the end of the busy season in Shanghai for clubbing and high-profile bookings, and this year we haven't really been starved for choice in terms of quality international acts and DJs. It seems local independent promoters have really developed their craft, connecting their "local platforms" with the international progenitors and originators of their given genres.
And so now you've been totally spoiled and won't go out unless it's to see some big name, but I would beseech you to check out this guy DJ SIG on Thursday, playing in Shanghai for his first time at the Karma Koma night at The Shelter. There's a lot of talent simmering in the smaller, "second tier" cities of China, and DJ SIG is really emblematic of the good stuff going on outside of Shanghai and Beijing that doesn't get much attention.
Musically, it's dark and atmospheric hip hop. This is the description in the promo material: "brooding, smokey beats with hints of acts such as Boards of Canada, Massive Attack, Portishead and even J-Dilla."
Really neat-o. Actually, it kind of reminds me of Afro Samurai. Good music for ninja showdowns over ancient swords in desolate, barren wastelands and stuff.
Ancient vendettas, blood-soaked scrolls, family feuds, archaic prophesies, and some MP3s:
DJ SIG - 第三只眼
DJ SIG - 恶循环柒
DJ SIG - 迷幻商店
Don't miss DJ SIG this Thursday at The Shelter. He's joined by the always insane LON, Drunk Monk, Chacha, and more. Cover is 20rmb Starts 10pm.
Here's DJ SIG on the web: Louder.cn; Neocha; Douban.
