MP3 Monday is a weekly SmartShanghai column, serving up mp3s from bands living and making music in China (or coming to China, or thinking about coming to China, or whatever). Right click on the links and choose "Save Link As..." to download 'em. Click play to rock 'em.
There's so much stuff going on this weekend, here's some more MP3s.
This dude
Safety Scissors is headlining the "
Antidote Live" party at The Shelter, along with awesome Changsha producer,
Length.
Here's one of his:
Length - Automatic Cockroaches
I recently had a chance to see Length (who is only 18) in Wuhan and Changsha, and was quite impressed with what he was doing. Kind of smokey, atmospheric "IDM" music. Subtle hooks and subterranean clicks. I would say it's trip hop, but he gets all bummed out if you call it trip hop. He got a good reception in Wuhan and when he was called upon to do an encore he goes, "nah, it's not really my style."
But he wasn't being snobbish, more like he wasn't subscribing to the cheesy encore thing. Quite amusing. What a classy guy. Check him out on the Neocha right
here and make sure you go early to catch his set.
But anyways, the MP3s are from the international headliner, Safety Scissors, a San Fran-based producer who spent some time behind enemy lines in Berlin. Musically, it's guilty electro pop, and on his
record label bio they cite Talking Heads, New Order and Magnetic Fields mixed with more obscure miscellanea (The Shaggs, Joe Meek, Emil Richards, Franco Battiato) as influences. On Saturday he's doing a live set with vocals followed by a DJ set on into the night. The first MP3 "Sunlight" is an unreleased remix by
The Soft Pink Truth, and the second one is an instrumental demo.

Also playing that night is pillar of the community, Mr. Stokes, back from doing some book learning in the States.
