MP3 Monday: The Bigger Bang!

By Morgan Short, Aug 31st, 2009 | In Nightlife

MP3 Monday is a weekly SmartShanghai column, serving up mp3s from bands living and making music in China (or coming to China, or thinking about coming to China, or whatever). Right click on the links and choose "Save Link As..." to download 'em. Click play to rock 'em.

Today's mp3s are from Beijing-based dance rock band, The Bigger Bang! They've played Shanghai twice before (I think) and are scheduled for a show at Yuyintang hosted by S.T.D. on September 19. It still a couple weeks down the line but here's some songs anyways.

Despite the band only forming in 2008, The Bigger Bang! is one of the more high profile bands in capital city these days, thanks in part to extensive touring, music videos, compilation albums, slots on big shows, some awards, and the fact that one of the guys in this band is also in big-time emo/dance rock band, TooKoo. Those dudes know how to shift units.

In a year and a half, they've already got music videos (check the video from Down! Down! Down! here), a live DVD released, and have played in Hong Kong and Taiwan -- that some fast progress.

Musically, it's cheeky, pout-y, dance rock in the vein of Queen Sea Big Shark, and if you like that band, you'd be down with these guys. Or if you a fan of anything from the house that Karen O built, this is up your alley as well. It could be a coincidence but when The Rolling Stones played China, their tour was called "The Bigger Bang Tour", so maybe that's where the name comes from.

Here's their MySpace, here's their Douban, and here's some Blondie. Because you can never have too much Blondie and it seems appropriate.

Holy shit, those vocals DO sound like Karen O. Do you have more pictures of the lead singer? I want to put some up near my Karen O shrine and see if they burn but are not consumed. If so, I'm THERE.
