[Covet]: USB Powered Footwarmer

By Morgan Short, Nov 19th, 2009 | In Shopping

"Covet" is a celebration of the mass accumulation of commodities. Basically, it's just seeing purchase-worthy stuff around Shanghai and sometimes purchasing it.

There was a stir in the office today. As I opened the door and punched in my time card, something was up -- something was amiss. My fellow co-workers were AWAY from their computers. Chairs were pulled back from their desks, screen savers were on, earbuds were out, no one was at their station.

"This is curious", I murmured to myself.

Everyone was grouped in the back, around one person's desk. Muffled oo's and ahh's emanated from the assembly. I pushed my way through the throng.

The center of attention, the item that had hitherto disrupted our usual routine of sober and studious computer diligence, was this little bad boy right here: a USB-powered Footwarmer. One of our more on-the-ball colleagues had managed to procure it for herself just this morn.

That's right, my friends. I don't know if you've noticed, but it's been balls cold the last few days or so in Shanghai, and said coldness is totally aggravated when your trade has you sitting at a computer all day in a warehouse, not really moving around. For us computer-type people some genius invented the USB-powered footwarmer, thereby offering to the world what I consider to be the absolute hight of human ingenuity and resourcefulness. I feel that several thousands of years of evolution have led us to this one creation. Empires have risen and fallen -- so many variables and vicissitudes have colluded into this one moment, this one point in time, this one event: my computer is not only the source of my greatest joy in life (Internet Backgammon) but is also powering my foot warmth.

It's all down-hill from here on in for humanity, but at least our feet will be warm as we backslide into oblivion.

How does it work? Plug it into your USB outlet, plug your feet into the slot, and sit there amazed as it warms up to a balmy 46 degrees. (That's Celsius, I don't know the conversion to Fahrenheit; I'm not a barbarian).

Where do you get one? Where else. Taobao. And probably subway station kiosks or something, but there is a certain thematic tidiness in using your computer to buy one of these and having it delivered to you. It feels really FUTURE-ZIP-ZAM-ZOOM to undertake the transaction this way. Here's the link to the TaoBao page.

How much? Depending on the size and make of your desired footwarmer, prices range from 12rmb to 50rmb. Just click on that link there.

As a final note, I'd also like to point out that style has NOT been sacrificed for utility in these USB-powered Footwarmers. As you can see, they've got Hello Kitty, "We Love China", Cute Pigs, Minnie Mouse, Winnie the Poe -- fantastic. Just fantastic.

Get on it! This is the best we can do as a species! Purchase it! Do it now!

"you're feet"? No, I'm not!

Mmmm...warm feet. Now all we need is a portable, slipper version so I never, ever have to remove my feet from this puffy cloud of comfort.

I wonder if there is a wireless version...? maybe one without hello kitty?

I have bought the USB gloves / very good! also can be bought at taobao for around 29 RMB per piece. The top of the finger is open so easy to work on the keyboard as well.
