Today's MP3s are from locally-based schizophrenic DJ/producer entity Mr.Windmill & Jay.Soul. The reason for this is two-fold: Mr.Windmill & Jay.Soul just released in December 2009 their
new 5-song EP "Shanghaii Lights". Today's downloads are some extra special tracks from that. But also, it's a good way to preview this Saturday’s "
Sick Trumpet" party, which features a full dance card of live jazz performers and a great DJ line-up, which includes a live set from Mr.Windmill (& Jay.Soul).
Jay.Soul you might recognize from various clubs around town --
Shelter,
Mural,
Barbarossa -- as well as from the parties A Nu Kind of Blu, Quality Control, and Back to the Roots. As a DJ, the Dutch transplant does hip hop, soul, funk, afrobeat, and stuff like that. When teamed up with the elusive Mr.Windmill for their own productions, it's all "jazzy sounds, thick basslines and heavy grooves."

So this Sick Trumpet party its name from the record label of the headliner, Mr. Phat Phil Cooper, coming to Shanghai for the first time. He does "Nu Northern Soul" nights (hey that’s all right), jazz and broken beat, with residencies at Cream Liverpool and Ministry of Sound. Check out the Sick Trumpet page
right here.
In addition to him, is a full supporting line-up, pairing Shanghai’s nu jazz, disco, hip hop, and soul enthusiasts – Alan Shanyinde, Mr.Windmill, Santo Chino, and Drunk Monk -- with live musicians (Theo Crocker on trumpet; Johnathan Parker on sax; and ChaCha singing). Pretty neat-o. Sounds like a good one. You can dig it.
So yeah, that's this Saturday. And here’s a bonus one from nasty gal Betty Davis, bringing the fire. Crank it.
