MP3 Monday: Maybe Mars Label Show

By Morgan Short, Jan 18th, 2010 | In Nightlife

Here’s a few MP3s ahead of the Maybe Mars record label show taking place this Friday at MAO Livehouse. There’s four bands total -- PK14, The Gar, 24Hours, and Rustic. Tickets for that one are 80rmb at the door and 60rmb advance (hey, look at that! -- you can order your tickets right here).

So all these bands have played in Shanghai before but this is the first time they’re all together in town on one bill as a record label showcase thing. It’s been a really good past few years for the headliners, PK14, and the label as a whole, so you can expect a big turnout for this show -- tens of thousands of millions of people crammed into MAO Livehouse, which would make it the biggest show they’ve had there in a little while. PK14, of course, just finished a little American tour. Here’s them in New York, written up on Brooklynvegan. Chinese band on Brooklynvegan -- it’s like the circle is now closed. And here’s some great photos and a write-up that Tim Franco did for SmartShanghai.

Anyways, this is the second Maybe Mars label night in Shanghai. They had one last year which was folded into Split Works’ Jue Festival. Last January it was Ourself Beside Me, AV Okubo, Snapline, and Carsick Cars at the Dream Factory. That was a really good one. Here’s a review of that concert from Andy Best. As a side note, the Jue Festival is returning to Shanghai and Beijing in March. Keep tabs on the developments of that by singing up for the newsletter right here.

So these label showcases are part of the Maybe Mars’ mandate to develop the fan base of their roster outside of Beijing, but also they’re working on getting the word out on their newer additions, like Rustic. It looks like they’re going to make them a fairly consistent event in Shanghai, and they’ve already got one planned for February (Carsick Cars, AV Okubo). These shows are also good if you’re looking to pick up CDs and t shirts and other assorted crap from Maybe Mars, as they bring down their merch table. Even if you’re looking for a CD from a band not on the bill, bring some extra cash because they might have it on for sale.

For MP3s we’ve just got one from PK14 and one from one of my fav bands on their label, The Gar. There you go.

I was listening to Rustic's song "Rock and Roll for money and sex" on Douban. Great stuff.
