MP3 Monday: Lots of Randomness
By Morgan Short, Feb 22nd, 2010 | In Nightlife
Back at work from the break, and like Chinese New Years of yore, I spent the vacation respecting the traditional way of observing this hallowed holiday: watching so many straight episodes of Babylon 5 that my brain implodes in on itself and leaks out my ears like rotten strawberry jam.
Thus back at the office, with a vacant smile on my face, I can't think straight enough to maintain interest in any specific thing for this MP3 column. Here's three downloads related to a few things that are going on soonish that might interest you.

AV Okubo's "AV Terminator"

Here's a song from one of China's bestest and most awesome bands, AV Okubo. Hailing from Wuhan, AV Okubo do punk rock with heavy electroclash-type action thrown in there (read: abrasive synths). AV Okubo have been arguably the most interesting thing out of Wuhan for a number of years now (in earlier days the band used to dress up in Cultural Revolution gear and do more of a demented B-52’s/Red Hot Chili Peppers kind of thing) and it seems they're finally receiving the business-marketing-$$$ push they've long deserved. After this Saturday's show co-headlining show with BJ indie rock band/Chinese rock Jesus Christs Carsick Cars, AV Okubo will be going to the States to play at SXSW. Right on.
This MP3 was taken from their label Maybe Mars' site, right here. If you're down with this band and other bands on that label, visit that page. Lots of downloads and assorted stuff.
Tickets for the S.T.D. presents Maybe Mars Record Label Showcase: Independent China in Stereo Vol. 3 w/ Carsick Cars, AV Okubo, Gau Li, and Birstriking @ Mao Shanghai Livehouse are available here.
Let's move some units on this thing.

DFA does that Fischerspooner song

This one's on here because disco duo Holy Ghost! is in town this weekend doing DJ sets and I'm procrastinating at work, looking around at DFA MP3s, and thinking about how cool it would be to be cool in New York. Cool. Cool. Cool. In NYC.
Holy Ghost! are on this label DFA Records, which is also a hot shit production team and one of the origin points of the re-re-re-resurgence of various older electronic genres in the mid 00's: nu neu new wave, "indie electro", Electroclash v 2.0.7 -- stuff like that. Mayhaps you're into LCD Soundsystem? Like to alternate your rock and dance?
Specifically anyways, I'm listening to these older DFA remixes, which were on the 2006 release "The DFA Remixes - Chapter One". Here's one they did of Fischerspooner's big hit "Emerge". That's random. A remix of "Emerge"... You. Don't. Have. To. Emerge. From. No. Thing. Remember?
But here's some interesting stuff relating to specifically to Holy Ghost! -- a recent mix tape by the duo, released in January of this year, and here’s Friendly Fires doing the Holy Ghost! song "Hold On".
Holy Ghost! are in town this weekend doing two DJ sets at two different clubs: this Friday at Pavillion Costes and this Saturday at Club MAO.

Looking forward to Dead Elvis

Lastly, here's an MP3 sent over by local grifter / tour manager handler guy / promoter Abe Deyo. This Dutch dude called Dead Elvis and his One Man Band is coming to Shanghai as part of this year's Jue Festival and it should be quite something.
Basically, it's a one man band and he dresses up like zombie Elvis. Hey, that's alright. As the MySpace elucidates, musically it's "a mix between lo-fi, r'n'r, garage, blues and country." I’m guessing if you’re down with psychobilly revival, good classic garage / punk rawk, and shit like The Cramps, you're going to want to mark your calendar for March 20, which is when Dead Elvis is in town playing at LOgO.
