Mp3 Monday: The Secret Machines
By Morgan Short, Mar 15th, 2010 | In Nightlife

Today, we've got the expansive "space rock" soundscapes of The Secret Machines, ahead of their Shanghai show this Saturday at Mao Livehouse (click here for tickets). An alt rock band with excessive psychedelic leanings, Secret Machines are a three-piece originally from Dallas, comprised of members that were in Tripping Daisy, UFOFU, and Captain Audio among others.
Since relocating to New York and the release of their third full-length album, SM have amassed a loyal and rabid fan base, as well as thunderous praise from esteemed media sources. Here's the oft-quoted summation on their sound by Rolling Stone: "They take Pink Floyd psychedelia, Led Zeppelin stomp, and The Who-inspired choruses and charge them full of big-rock beats, atmospheric keyboards and all kinds of electronic whooshes." Yeah. Kind grunge. Kinda psychedelic. Secret Machines are also known for their live shows -- they've got two live releases -- so if you like these tracks, you should imagine them bigger, louder, and more heart rattling in a big live concert venue.
This first song is off their first album Now Here is Now Where. It's one of their most well-known tunes. First encore? Second encore?
This one is a bonus track on the UK release of their self-titled album (which was actually their third album):
And this last one is their new single of an as-of-yet unreleased new album. This was just released on the internet at the start of 2010.
So there you go. Secret Machines, this Saturday at MAO Livehouse. If you liked MONO down there at the end of last year, you should think about going to this one on Saturday. Should be quite the maximal rock extravaganza. Here's that ticketing link again.
