More MP3s: Upcoming Shelter Events

By Morgan Short, Apr 27th, 2010 | In Nightlife

The Shelter has a great week of events -- save for Sacco -- on their run up to oblivion. Go to all of them. Head on down and get lit. Get inharmonious. Give the bartenders and managers and ayi a big hug. Enjoy it while you can.

Wednesday: The Swap Meet

The Swap Meet is a Wednesday party from local house DJ Slackerton, featuring a rotating cast of other Shanghai DJs on the decks, playing all sorts of house-y, disco-y stuff -- emphasis on the quality. You can read an old interview with Slackerton discussing the Wednesday Swap Meet parties here, although the interviewer perhaps erroneously stressed the prevalence of video games and / or video game nerds at this thing. This week they're hosting Robjam, host of erstwhile Basic Needs parties. He's going to be playing UK garage, which you don't hear often in Shanghai. Support staff is Slackerton and the Pony Boys. Visuals by Tina Sprinkles, deco by garmaan, and oh look at that... SUPER STREET FIGHTER 4 BEFORE MIDNIGHT. Yoga FIRE! Cover: 10rmb.

Thursday: Teenage Kicks

Teenage Kicks is DJ Sacco and a few friends from the Badtastic crew delving deep, deep into '90s hip hop, guilty pleasures of bygone eras, and prom shakers from the '80s. Emphasis is on the lack of quality, although the dude playing the '90s hip hop seems to know what he's doing. Expect lots of silly fun-time dancing and stuff. Balloons. Crap punch, maybe. Someone might play White Zombie. This one is right before the holiday, so I'm thinking it will be quite good. Here's a download from Bruce. If they're not playing this one, they should.

'Cause tramps like us, baby, we were born to run. Best guitar-sax-guitar solo ever. Cover: 10rmb.

Friday: Back the Classics Vol. 1

The first of hopefully many installments, "Back to the Classics" is club manager Gary and the Lab Crew, joined by DJ Mick and elnomo, playing classic hip hop from yesteryear. Odds are good PE's "Fight the Power" will be played. If your looking for an alternative to the Top 40 hip hop that rules Shanghai clubs, don't miss out on that. Expect good things from elnomo, as for the evening he will be unconstrained by the Grandmaster Flash "Do Not Play List". Cover is 30rmb.

Saturday: WONKY KONG pres. Jack Beats

Please install Flash Player

The big event for the club this week is Jack Beats, a DJ duo consisting of DJ Plus One from the Scratch Perverts and Beni G from Mixologists. Although they're coming from scratch territory, expect music combining elements from electro, hip hop, drum n bass, dubstep, and baltimore club. This is the first event from new promoter/DJ crew wonky kong -- they've have Drop the Lime scheduled for an event in the near future -- and if you like bass that goes thump in the night, don't miss out. More on wonky kong here. Cover: 80rmb.

But if you want to get in FREE....

The contest is now closed. Thanks to everyone who wrote in.
