MP3 Monday: Lower Profiles
By Morgan Short, May 31st, 2010 | In Nightlife
MP3 Monday is a weekly SmartShanghai column, serving up mp3s from bands living and making music in China (or coming to China, or thinking about coming to China, or whatever). Copyright holders: if you would like your song removed, please email us here, and we'll honor your request promptly.
Shanghai is a busy place these days. Lots of Expo-ey things invading the clubs and live music bars -- this week sees the Germans picking up where the Fins left off, with a free showcase concert at Mao Livehouse (event details here), and a bunch of electronic acts hitting the smaller clubs (here and here). There's also the TransmitCHINA two-night showcase (event details here and here), with a bunch of Canadian bands, and looking forward to the rest of June, there's DJ Premier, Drop the Lime, SUBS, King Khan & BBQ, Lymbyc System, Pet Conspiracy...
But for this week's MP3s, here's two shows coming up soonish that might be under your radar.

This first band The Phoenix Prestige is playing at the new 696 Livehouse this Saturday. This three-piece comes from Ireland by way of Hangzhou, and they've already been to Shanghai a few times. They're returning as part of a larger China tour behind their new album, The Bullet Catch. These songs are from that. Musically it's sort of post rock cinematography + angst punk rock + loop samples + feedback. They sample that movie Memento, in that first one. It's really quite good. Second one is more of a straight alt rock thing. Thumbs up.
Head on down this Saturday to check them out -- lesser-known, but up-and-comin' band hammering it out. Moon Tyrant opens. Starts 9:30pm. Cover: 40rmb.

This next band, Cocoon, is a folk two-piece from France, bringing the Cat Steven gravitas and new folk introspection down to Yuyintang this Thursday. These songs are from their first album My Friends All Died In A Plane Crash (2007). Get reflective. Musically, it would fit right in with that scene in The Royal Tenenbaums when the dude is cutting off his hair and committing suicide because he's in love with his sister. Enjoy.
Here's a review of them playing at SXSW.
S.T.D. pres. Cocoon at Yuyintang on Thursday. Starts 9pm. Cover: 60rmb. Opening is Grandma's Bear, which is kind of shoegazery, who is this right here.
