MP3 Monday: Shelter Anniversary
By Morgan Short, Nov 29th, 2010 | In Nightlife
MP3 Monday is a weekly SmartShanghai column, serving up mp3s from bands living and making music in China (or coming to China, or thinking about coming to China, or whatever). Copyright holders: if you would like your song removed, please email us here, and we'll honor your request promptly.
This weekend -- starting on Thursday, rather -- The Shelter is celebrating three years of running mad game with three-way party action: three nights of parties, this Thursday, Friday, and Saturday.
They are:
December 2: Shelter Anniversary Part 1 -- Das Racist
December 3: Shelter Anniversary Part II -- DJ Mitsu the Beats
December 4: Shelter Anniversary Pat III -- Sub-Culture pres. Jack Sparrow
That's three nights of international bookings -- acts from America, Japan, the UK, and of course, China -- with music tilted towards the hip hop, but spanning out there into associated and tertiary genres: dubstep, dub, tribal, and things like that. Here's a bit of background on each, and a sample track.

The soup du jour in American hip hop these days is Brooklyn three-piece, Das Racist, a hip hop act which seems to confound people as to whether to take them seriously or not. Is it joke rap? Or is it a savage and penetrating critique of kkkonsumerism in American and hip hop culture and stuff? This is their big hit -- "Combination Pizza Hut and Taco Bell" -- which is an epic search for transcendental meaning against the effacing backdrop of corporate USA. Vibe out to that deconstruction. Can you dig it. Cover: cheap cheap at 50rmb. On the remix. Bring your Spivak reader.

The next night, on the Friday, V-Nutz takes over host duties, and that means heritage hip hop and turntablalism. The headliner is Japanese beatz guru, Mitsu the Beats, delineating when jazz meets hip hop. But for the sample track, we've got something by local hip hop beats-maker, Ceezy. Shanghai pride. It's a stuttering, buzzy, jazzy little thing. Pretty neat. He's opening for Mitsu, along with the 2010 DMC China champ, HDB, Sense and V-Nutz. Cover: 60rmb.

And to round out night three, local bass vigilantes, Sub-Culture are hosting Leeds, UK dubstep producer, Jack Sparrow. Probably the second most famous guy to have that name, but probably a better producer. He has releases on Senseless Records, Contagious, Earwax and Pinch’s Tectonic label. Check out his spacey stuff on his SoundCloud -- album streaming therein. He's joined by Drunk Monk, Steven Lorenz, Didje, ChaCha, Esia, and Aminda, for a smokey night of the deep and loud stuff. Cover: 50rmb.
Congrats to The Shelter on this, the occasion of their three year anniversary!
