For years Shanghai has served as an international cultural hub, only in these few weeks the city is hosting an exhibition by French sculptor Auguste Rodin, a ballet performances by Italy's most renowned ballet company 'Balletto Della Scala', a concert by German super-star conductor Justus Frantz and a DJ gig by world rank #2 Armin Van Buuren from the Netherlands.
However, as Shanghai continues to serve as a stage for the exposure of international artists and brands, I fear that Shanghai may be so overshadowed with external influence that its own cultural essence doesn't get enough attention. In my opinion, every global city of such calibre as Shanghai should be in some ways culturally unique with its own sense style. Accordingly, there should be a scene for the local artists, designers, innovators etc. to be seen and heard.
Luckily 2006 has brought many events that gave local artists a platform to showcase their works to a wide publicity.
SmartShanghai's "Shanghai Social Series" was one of them, another one is the upcoming Shanghai Creative Bazaar, a newly organized and developed showcase for Shanghai's many artists, designers, craftsmen, innovators, and pretty much anyone that produces exceptionally interesting things to display their works to the city. Founded under the idea of an organic platform for the expression of Shanghai¡¯s artisans, as well as an engaging and enjoyable social opportunity, the "Shanghai Creative Bazaar" plans on holding events on a bi-monthly basis at different locations around the city, starting with the first one this Saturday the 18th being held at the events largest sponsor¡¯s own place, The Zendai MOMA Museum of Modern Art.
