Yue Festival Rolls into Town

By Cameron Wilson, Sep 24th, 2007 | In Art

All you bad boys and girls always bitching that no good bands ever come to Shanghai and that Beijing has the better live music scene can put down your sticks and stones and prepare to party, as some serious musical business is heading our way. No less than one of the biggest dance acts in the world, Faithless, are coming to town as they headline the Shanghai stop of the Yue Festival on October 5.

Joining them on the bill are two other acts who are also big names in their own right. Talib Kweli, one of hip-hop's most innovative and acclaimed performers will play, as will Ozomatli, a double-grammy winning nine piece outfit from Los Angeles with their inimitable blend of hip hop, Latin, funk and soul.

Regardless of your musical tastes, there is no doubt that this trio of acts represents surely one of the strongest line-ups Shanghai has ever seen both in terms of their international standing and sheer musical ability. Will the city finally shake off its bad reputation for quality live music? The 5,000 or so expected festival-goers will be sure to have something to say about that once the party is over.

The action itself takes place at Zhongshan Park from 12 noon to 10.30pm. Once looked upon by many of Shanghai's French Concession-centric clubbers as the edge of the universe because Metro line two ended there, the recent subway extension out to Songhu Lu now makes the area seem a more central and convenient location.
