This Saturday and Sunday, the
Shanghai Tan Creative Bazaar will be taking place from 12pm to 5pm at No.508, Jiashan Lu, by Jianguo Xi Lu. Building on the success of
last year's series of events, the event this weekend will be the first in 2007, and will return as a bimonthly weekend event after that. The Creative Bazaar will showcase several locally-based Chinese and expat designers, photographers, craftspeople, artists and "anyone who produces interesting and extraordinary products."
As a scaled-down and organic platform (anyone can sign up to get a booth for cheap), the Creative Bazaar is an ideal outlet for locally-based artists and designers looking to get their work and ideas out there, but don't really fit the mold or have access to conventional methods of distributing their work. Because of this eclectic and open structure, guests can expect to find many interesting and idiosyncratic artworks, crafts and designs from Shanghai's broad community of undiscovered or overlooked talent.
That's what's called a win-win situation.
Here are a few that will be on display:
Lucky Pebbles:

Lucky Pebbles is the artworks of Jozalien de Witte, who starting painting intricate and ornate designs on rocks and pebbles after being inspired by painting Easter eggs. Interestingly enough, they don't suck. Unique in form and concept, her pieces show a real talent for creative design, and are thematically distinctive and diverse.
My Hand Book:
"My Hand Book" is a conceptual project/product created by designer K.M. Tan. In reaction to the daily bombardment of information coming from the outside world (offered as examples are "urgent phone calls, frantic sms'es, priority emails, persistently popping msn's"), Tan has created a box-set package designed to inspire and compel people to shut out the world and rediscover the pleasures of writing. Comprised of writing materials, quotations, short stories about the joys of writing and an instruction manual to set people in the right direction, "My Hand Book" is a unique way for people to partake in a little introspection and reconnect with their inner writing voice.
insh:
insh is the locally-based label of designer Helen Lee. Her styles take Shanghai history, culture and city living as their inspiration, and
"combine Shanghai icons, people and ideas with bright colors, energetic shapes and cross - cultural themes to create a style that is truly Shanghai." Offering casual and formal styles for men and women, insh looks beyond the clich¨¦s of Shanghai fashion to offer something eclectic and new. At the Creative Bazaar, insh will be showing their latest and most popular signature designs.
