Coldcut's sampling, cut and paste beat junkie Raj Pannu packed them in last night at
The Shelter, and attendees were treated to an innovative and diverse set of hip hop, funk and soul.
Tonight he makes an encore appearance at
Atanu, spinning with the S.T.D. regulars, so if you missed him last night don't make the same mistake twice.
With a stream of collaborations under his belt with the likes of Gilles Peterson, DJ Food, and Tony Allen, Raj is now at the helm of Coldcut, arguably one of the finest group of producers of our time. Dubbed the "xen masters of hip hop" Coldcut debuted way back in 1990 with a silver album. Shortly thereafter they toured Japan and hit Asia's airwaves before setting up one of the most prolific independent labels in the UK -- Ninja Tune. The label has a collection of the finest DIY DJ's in the world hand picked from dusty basements, dirty warehouses and pirate radio stations. SmartShanghai caught up with Raj for a quick interview to find out more about the man behind the decks and what to expect at the show...
Where are you from originally?
I'm from Newcastle in the sunny old north of England
What is yours and Coldcut's sound?
Coldcuts sound is wide ranging, covering a lot of electronic music from hip hop to house to breaks and a little techno even...
Who are you influenced by?
The list of my influences is just too long and favorites change with my mood and by the day. Right now I am really enjoying John Barry and weird stuff like Hudson Mohawke and Rustie.
How long have you been Dj-ing and when did it all start?
I've been Dj-ing since I was 14, so that's 18 years now. I started at school parties and when I was 17 got a residency at the local funk and soul club back home.
Who have you most enjoyed collaborating with and why?
The Coldcut and Ninja Tune and Big Dada crew over the last two years, touring around the world. Shout out to Juice Aleem and Nu Flesh...
How did you get involved with S.T.D.?
I came to China with HP on a sponsored tour with Coldcut -- the "Art in Motion" tour -- and my old friend Jeff lives here, so when I came back for a holiday he introduced me to some people so I could play out while I¡¯m here.
What should we expect from the live show on Sat? And how is it different?
The show on Saturday isn't "live" as such; it's a combination of turntables, laptop sampling and drum machines. I'm looking forward to it because I'll be free to experiment more than I ever can with a Coldcut gig. Just come and see. It will be fun.
How many times have you played in China? And where?
I've played in China twice so far and HK once, as part of the HP Art in Motion tour. China was one of the only countries missed from our world tour in 2006 so I was really happy to get this chance.
What do you think of the music scene in Shanghai?
I've not seen much of the music scene in Shanghai, as I was only here two days, but I played The Shelter last time on the Sunday and met Reggie from S.T.D, and Garry and Gareth from Quality Control. I like what they do and are representing and I hope it can grow.
What would you like to see more of here (in terms of music)?
Weird, experimental new stuff and top quality artists, up and coming artists, who will be someone tomorrow but here today. But I guess you want that everywhere...
Do you ever use any Chinese elements in your sets?
I don't have any elements of Chinese music in my set so far, but who knows, I also VJ with Coldcut and we try to incorporate elements of where we travel into those sets...
