Jasmine Bridge attempts to blend contemporary dining with Chinese style but comes off looking kitsch. This would not have been so noticeable if there were other people in the restaurant, but being utterly devoid of people it had no atmosphere at all.
The food was a simple Chinese fare with a French twist, it was clearly constructed for a western palette and therefore not particularly exciting. The portion size was tiny, you need at least 2 dishes per person plus rice for a satisfying meal. Though I admit I have a large capacity for food intake. We had the Yulong Tea Beef (58rmb) and Sweet and Sour pork along with the Chinese staple spicy tofu. These were all nicely crafted dishes and very enjoyable but for the price there was simply not enough of it. However they do have a business lunch for 38rmb, which is an excellent deal, including soup or salad, a main dish, and jasmine tea. This would be perfect for a light but fairly formal lunch and I feel this is where Jasmine Bridge will excel. They also run a 2 for 1 offer on Monday evenings which makes it much more appealing for an evening meal as well. As a new restaurant they are clearly using these deals to bring customers but they may just find their niche.
The drinks menu was comprehensive and the bar area was probably the best part of the restaurant. The prices are expensive at 55rmb for a Gin and Tonic but not as expensive as other places in Shanghai. It could easily become a place for people to meet up and have a relaxing drink and a snack or two. That is if they sort out the awful selection of music.
