Rebel Ink Shanghai Style

By James, Feb 22nd, 2006 | In Wellbeing

Tattoos in China have long been frowned upon, this could be a consequence of history, during the Qin and Han dynasties tattoos were used to mark criminals, or the enforced conformism during the cultural revolution. They are also associated with gangs and organized crime, in fact not much different to other countries. However, now young people are breaking the mould to be alternative or chasing fashion trends, and tattoos are becoming an increasingly popular way to express identity. There are not many places to get tattooed in Shanghai and it is even harder to find somewhere that is clean and provides quality service. Here are a couple of recommendations:

John Long Tattoo is one of the most established tattoo studios in Shanghai and has a reputation for quality designs and good hygiene. It was opened in 1998 and artist Xing Haisong has never repeated a design since then. When you leave John Long Tattoo you will have something completely original. Tattoos there cost at least 300rmb, as the needles and ink they use will all be thrown away after. See their website for lots of information on getting healthy and good tattoos (Johnlongtattoo.com)

Colombian tattoo artist Ed Mensajes also has a good reputation and has done some staggering and striking designs like the one here and others that can be seen on his website (edtattoos.com)

Once you've got your tattoo and got over the pain you can head down to Mural Bar - new Tat-Two event for a free drink for you and a buddy every Thursday, but you have to show the bar staff so be careful where you get it!
