True to form, concert finalizations were made at the last minute for local live music venue
Yuyintang, and they've just released their line up for their holiday weekend. Featuring the standard yearly Midi festival overflow in terms of foreign bands, the best two acts coming in are
Suferosa (Norway) appearing with fellow country-mates
karinpark. That's happening on May 8. Also don't miss the
21st Century Noise show the night before on May 7. They're a Swedish band playing catchy roots punk-type stuff and put on a pretty good show.
Gammalux (May 3), a metal/hardcore band that's been through China numerous times over the last few years will be playing May 3. Click on any of those to see their MySpace pages.
Now on May 1 and 2, Yuyintang is hosting a load of Chinese bands to balance out all those crackers performing on the other dates. These are a great opportunity to catch up on what Chinese acts are doing (if you care) because the shows will be happening over the holidays. For both dates, the concerts start at 8pm and end at 2pm.
May 1: YuGuo, Crazy Mushroom, Cold Fairyland, Loudspeaker, Sultans of Swing, Little Nature, Overdose (Nanjing) -- Cover: 40rmb for students; 50rmb for everyone else.
May 2: Red Banana, Heaven's Night, MiG21, Old Doll (Nanjing), Angry Jerks (Nanjing) -- Cover: 30rmb for students; 40rmb for everyone else.
May 1 features primarily Shanghai bands, with the exception of street punk band
Overdose from Nanjing.
YuGuo are also known as Flying Fruit and play alt rock in the vein of Muse.
Crazy Mushroom are a nu metal band, with intermittent bouts of RCHP-itis, and
Cold Fairyland are kinda dad rock and sound like Pink Floyd. But they've been around forever and people love 'em.
Loudspeaker, you might know from last weekend's "Rock-Electro-Tour," as well as many punk shows around town over the years. They play skate / thrash punk a la Pennywise -- but they're sounding a bit more epic and metalish these days. I hear they're working on another album too. That should be good.
Sultans of Swing are a talented group of local blues musicians (Yes, they cover "Sultans of Swing" by Dire Straits and yes, it's turbo rad).
Little Nature are a younger pop punk band (think Simple Plan).
In my humble opinion, the highlight of the night are the closers, Overdose from Nanjing. They put on a real good show a few weeks back at the newly-opened (and newly-reshut)
LOgO, and sounded to me a lot like The Distillers (which is a pretty good thing).
May 2 is when the out-of-town acts take to the stage (with the exception of
MiG21). Can't say what the first two bands sound like, but MiG21 are a nu metal band (heavy emphasis on the NU),
Old Doll are an old school punk band, and
Angry Jerks are China's finest psychobilly band. These guys alone are worth the price of admission. This is one of the best punk bands ever in China. They made their mark as a hardcore band for the last several years, but have recently redefined themselves as a gearhead-type psychobilly band (pompadour haircuts, stand up bass, the lot). Musically, it's more straightforward and harder that something like Reverend Horton Heat (less riff-tastic), and the singer really brings the "psycho" to hammer it home. Don't miss out on that one.
As a plus, Yuyintang is opening up their back doors to the park, and encouraging everyone to come down early for the shows. Bring food, frisbees, your dog, uh... Gameboys... what else do people do in parks? This is also good if you think one of the bands is shit and you need somewhere to hang out and drink beer until they get off the stage.
Anyways, all this information minus my blathering is available on the
events listing page.
Also,
Live Bar is hosting their own little rock festival. Details of that are on the "
SmSh Wire" or in the events listings.
Just got an email that
The 21st Century Noise, that aforementioned Balkan -- wait sorry Swedish -- garage punk band will be playing at
Windows Tembo this Saturday. So may rawk shows. Good times. Basically, if you walk out of your apartment at all for the next little while, a good band will be right there slapping you in the face with the rock.
