Party Heart-ey

Sichuan Earthquake Charity Events in Shanghai - By Morgan, May 14, 08

Shanghai is reacting in a very Shanghai way to the tragedy of the Sichuan Earthquake -- throwing a bunch of parties. Promoters and venues are putting together events to get the clubbers out putting their drinking money to good use. And what's wrong with that? Hey, you were probably going to get lit up this weekend anyways -- you might as well get lit up for a good cause.

Mural Bar is hosting an assortment of locally-based talent -- Missile Miles, Skinny Babou, and the DJ with the biggest and sexiest heart, DJ Sexy Paul -- this Saturday. They are joined by live Peruvian band "Jingo." Now the cover for that is 50rmb, all of which is going to a charity organization supporting the victims of the earthquake. And you get two free drinks on entry. Also, if you'd like to give more, a donation box will be available to accept your contributions.

And just around the corner from Mural is Cotton's, one of Shanghai's favorite patio night spots, who are throwing a Relief BBQ this Sunday. From 12pm to 5pm, 150rmb gets you all-you-can-eat BBQ (not including drinks) and half the proceeds will be donated to the Red Cross.

The LGBT with the Shanghai Studio is also throwing a fund raiser party this Saturday to raise money for victimes of the earthquake, with Gwen from Tempe dressed in something fabulous and accepting your donations. If you plan to head down on Saturday, make sure you bring a little something extra for Gwen.

Also with a charitable mind is The Shelter, who are donating an extremely large amount of money -- 36 large to be exact (36,000rmb) -- to the Red Cross. This is money that's been raised over the last three months of Shelter Foundations. That's a really heafty amount for a bar to donate so congrats to them for that. Really.

And if you're in the mood to rock the EFF out while your charity rmbs are put to work, head on down to Yuyintang this Sunday for a charity show with Shanghai's up-and-coming rock bands: Brunch, Bad Joke, Lollipop, The Collars, WILDCAT, Little Nature, Desert Store, Jiaoke, Banana Monkey, and King of Idiot. Music style runs the lengthy gamut of pop punk, punk proper, skate punk, street punk, nu punk, and garage punk. Cover is 30rmb (all of which goes to charity) and it starts at 6pm.

We've also got word that the JZ Club is putting something together to raise money, so look out for that in the near future.

Every little bit counts and its good to see people doing what they can to help out.

If you're looking to be more direct with your contribution, along with their extensive coverage of the event itself, the Shanghaiist provides information on how to make donations directly to Red Cross here, and they've also got something on donating blood here -- this last one with a strangely mesmerizing photo.

And sorry about this article title... its been a long day.
