Shanghai Community International School was an early entrant to the international school sphere in Shanghai back in 1996. As the fourth established school in Shanghai, they distinguished themselves from American, German, and British schools that had already been established in Shanghai by focusing on having a curriculum that was not tied to a national identity. The school subsequently adopted certified International Baccalaureate programming in 2008, and as of 2017, has become the second International school in Shanghai to be a full continuum IB world school.
Shanghai Community International School (SCIS) has had both of its campuses (Hongqiao and Pudong) authorized as an International Baccalaureate (IB) World School, accredited to teach the IB Primary Years Programme (PYP), IB Middle Years Programme (MYP), and the IB Diploma Programme (DP). As an IB World School, we are part of a global community of schools committed to developing knowledgeable, caring young people who will be ready to negotiate their futures successfully and make contributions resulting in a more harmonious and peaceful world.
At SCIS, our curriculum includes performing arts, visual arts, languages, and athletics, in addition to numerous extracurricular activities for students to learn and develop skills outside the classroom. We nurture our students to be well-versed in more than one discipline and prepare them for university and beyond.
SCIS places such importance on its shared community due to its international nature, with students from over 60 different countries. There is no one dominant culture. With such a broad mix of nationalities, there isn’t a home culture. The staff and students at SCIS come together to create their own culture and their own community, something they have done successfully since SCIS was founded 20 years ago.

Attending SCIS starting at the young age of 3, I was fortunate to be introduced to many different cultures. Throughout the 15 years, as the school and community changed and grew, SCIS’s internationally diverse student body remained a constant. Learning about and celebrating different cultures together with my friends and classmates was normal. The diversity in cultures and nationalities of SCIS students has provided me with a keen sense of cultural awareness, far beyond that of the “average Joe” in today’s world.

I have been really impressed to see how they have developed into socially strong and open minded individuals over the course of past two years in SCIS. This aspect of personal strength and skills cannot be over emphasized especially with naturally introvert Finns. This was the main reason why I chose to enroll them into SCIS when moving over to Shanghai. I have to admit that I have not regretted one day, that we ended up choosing SCIS for their school here in Shanghai.

We are happy to be at SCIS. We trust that SCIS is the right environment. We have heard a lot of comparisons by talking to other parents and I think this environment at SCIS is not as strict compared to German schools. You have the freedom to explore yourself and develop your personality and get to be a part of a community. These are the advantages here. There are not many schools where a teacher would stay after school and spend so much of their own time and help you grow. People have this misconception about it being an easy education. I think the thought process is continually in our brain—to figure things out by ourselves and learn that your future is in your own hands.
WASC is a regional accreditation body for US schools. It helps to assure the general public and educational community that an institution has clearly defined objectives for education, has conditions for which achievement of objectives can be reasonably expected, is staffed and organized to continue to do so, amongst several other criteria.
