Curated by Biljana Ciric for the Department for Culture and Education (DCAE) of the German Consulate, Alternatives to Ritual features selected artists producing projects over a half-year period. Artworks will reflect on cultural constructions and social frameworks in a China, referencing Germany's 1972 landmark Documenta 5 show. Artists will also explore how different formats of exhibitions, contexts and conditions of appearance can reflect individual attitudes and perceptions. Alternating between solo and group, the exhibition's presentation will change over its course, featuring a main space surrounded by so-called 'Artists' Museums': smaller displays held inside the Goethe Institute's offices, focusing on a single artist. Held over a six month period, the exhibition seeks to physically and metaphorically explore all areas of the DCAE through a varied program to include lectures and workshops. More info here
