About

Rockbund Art Museum kicks off 2016 with a solo by Singaporean artist Heman Chong. Ifs, Ands, or Buts "explores spaces between text and images, producing new ways of relating the two through works commissioned specifically for the museum". A master of combining ostensibly disparate references - for example, Samuel Beckett's Waiting for Godot next to Mr. Bean - Chong creates absurd and bizarre fictions, rich in sardonic, black humor. Highlights include site-specific installation, Legal Bookshop that sees the museum's gift shop replaced with a bookshop, its law-themed contents selected by one Ken Liu, lawyer and award-winning author. Elsewhere, video installation Re-Re-Re-Run comprises a mash-up of Mr. Bean and Road Runner, while monumental sculpture Endless (Nights) comprises 10,000 copies of unprinted, blank newspapers in a darkened room. Recommended.
