China in Flames (Китай в огне) is a 1925 animated Soviet propaganda film supporting Sun Yat-sen and the Chinese people fighting Western capitalists and Chinese landlords. Directed by Nikolai Khodataev, Zenon Komissarenko, and Youry Merkulovm it is fascinating from an historic and political perspective, as well as being a tour-de-force for its artistic features, including its unprecedented length, original technique, and skillful incorporation of elements derived from Chinese art. Karolina Pawlik, a researcher of visual modernism, introduces the film, providing background on the film’s connection to the "Hands off China" movement that spread across the USSR in 1924, involving intellectuals that included prominent Soviet poet Vladimir Vladimirovich Mayakovsky.
