This walking tour begins at the Shanghai Concert Hall (formerly the Nanking Theater) and skirts the perimeter of the former race course and Recreation Ground, now the People's Square and Park, heading northward on Xizang Road to Nanjing West Road. The tour focuses on old amusement halls, hotels and theaters from the 1920s-30s era, including the Great World, the Far Eastern Hotel, the Yangtze Hotel, the Grand Cinema, and the Park Hotel. The tour ends at the former Shanghai Race Club, now the Shanghai Historical Museum. The author, an expert on the nightlife of Old Shanghai, will narrate how this area became a hotbed for the emergence of the Chinese jazz age, blending more 'traditional' Chinese entertainment with the dances and music of the American jazz age.
