About

Columbia Circle is a beautiful, overgrown, almost untouched enclave of 1920s houses, a garden city designed by Hungarian master Laszlo Hudec, featuring 10 different styles - “Hollywood”! “San Clemente”! “Florida”! Residents were a cosmopolitan mix of the who’s who of old Shanghai – British financiers, American journalists, car dealers, missionaries, Swedish diplomats, Chinese tycoons, Japanese collaborationist turncoats, businessmen, and the little boy who grew up to be Empire of the Sun author J.G. Ballard. We’ll also visit the nearby Columbia Country Club (confusingly, now called “Columbia Circle”) - the former American country club that’s now a new F&B destination - and a pair of architectural beauties that Laszlo Hudec built for himself. RSVP for meeting point and to book: info@historic-shanghai.com. 250rmb for nonmembers, 150rmb for members.
