Ten Chinese Artists
78 Changping Lu Taxi Printout
1918 grinds an ax over its commitment to nurturing "emerging artists." Adamant in its project, this group exhibition displays young, less established artists operating under the concept of "progress," looking specifically at the past three years. Show includes a not-so-subtle painting of a neon SOS sign thrust atop the Great Wall.
Chinese contemporary art has achieved considerable performances in international markets and art world in the last three years. We are proud of such performances. However, Chinese contemporary artists seem to be "ranked" in a pragmatic way, both in market and academic system. There are "A-level artists," "B-level artists," and "emerging artists" etc. According to such ranking, how an art organization gets ranked depends on what and how to do with the markets and academic system. So, no matter which "rank" you are in, it pays if you work really hard. At least, you will not be lost at sea, you do have an orientation.
According to this pragmatic standard or orientation, 1918 ArtSPACE is not doing what is right in the last three years. Anyway, we've got a clear direction after we take these standards as a reference and we will be going as far as we can in that way. Well, what is our direction? I think the ongoing exhibition tells what our way is. Our artists sincerely treat their desire to create, and make their ideas come true in a technically perfect way. We, as the gallerists, respect their works, believe in these artists and believe in ourselves. That's the way of 1918 ArtSPACE.
Exhibition concept
The show, titled "Ten – Chinese Artists Group exhibition" is based on the big progress made in the last three years. We have selected the artists, with our perception and subjective preference, from the fields of painting, sculpture and installation. There're ten of them and the number seems that we are making up the amount, but people can think anyway. These ten artists are all born in 1970s, they are well-trained in art academies and has participated in a big number of international exhibitions as well art fairs. Their creation is steady and do not change for market's fluctuation. They are serious to themselves and keep making progress. We don't classify them into any "level" or "rank," we wish more people could see their works and get to know them. Their works are qualified to be another standard someday. We think their works needs us to see with our eyes, to feel with our experience and nature. None of them are good at expressing themselves with talk. 1918 ArtSPACE is not good at telling people with words what level we are at. But we are all good at demonstrating ourselves through action. I think the works, even without academic explanation in jargons and terms, have their academic values. The viewpoint of audiences – if they have an underlying interaction with the works with their eyes – could be more real and joyful than those so-called academic statements as we always heard.
