The famous Shanghai "Fabric Market" is home to hundereds of tailors and seamstresses, and is the city's prime destination for bespoke clothing garments. If it can be stitched and sewn, they can do it for you at the South Bund Fabric Market.

This is actually a Hong Kong brand, but it draws on an olde Shanghai aesthetic. Shanghai Tang was founded in 1994 and is one of the most successful early luxury brands from China. This is their lavish Xintiandi store. Head in for pricy fashion in bright colors.

There are a bunch of W.W. Chan & Sons outlets in town and they pride themselves in being some of the best old-school gents' tailors in China. They have been making suits since 1952, and still retain the skills and traditions of bespoke men's tailoring. There are cheaper tailors in town, but here you'll get grade A service.

This is a decent tailor in the mid price range. Pop in for a professional fitting and they'll run you up a suit for around 3000rmb and up. Range of materials, qualities and styles available.

Eleganza Uomo bespoke tailor might be one of the best tailors in the city, it has several locations in both Puxi and Pudong, you can contact them to find out the nearest shop.

Tony the Tailor specializes in custom tailoring for suits, blouses, coats, tuxedos. He'll turn around a suit in a couple of days so he's a good option if you're not in Shanghai for long or you have guests here that want a suit made while they're visiting. Not the priciest place in town but a few notches above the fabric market.

This is another high-end tailors, working out of the former French Concession. They work mainly with imported fabrics and styles, with finished suits starting around 400 Euros and heading up to about 1000 Euros. Head in for a fitting and they'll tell you why you're paying Western prices in China.

Stel Lee is one of the only female Chinese tailors making suits for men in Shanghai. Her stuff has a bit more flair and originality than many of the more traditional suitmakers in town, and she speaks good English, too. Ms Lee takes real pride in the product and a suit will take about two weeks to run up, but you'll see the difference. Suits start around 4000rmb, so it's not crazy money, either.

This is one of our favorite tailors in town. Friendly, English-speaking staff will run you up a high-quality suit in a week. They also do a nice line in shoes and shirts -- it's the dapper gent's playground.

Tailor Dave is something of an institution in China. Dave K. C. Shiung was born in Taipei; at the age of 14, he was apprentice to a Shanghainese tailor master and has been making suits ever since. He was voted one of the world's best tailors by Forbes magazine in 2007, the only Chinese tailor to make the top 10. Suits take about two weeks to finish and cost from 4000rmb.
