[My Weekender] with Adrian Lai

Jul 23rd, 2010

Adrian Lai is an Interactive Producer, DJ, and Photographer. He works at Wieden+Kennedy Shanghai.

Fuck yeah it's Friday. Now what?

Friday evening, I'll be at the grand opening of Waterhouse, Shanghai's newest boutique hotel. Since it's a Grand Opening, not a Soft Opening, I'm hoping for the works: Bollywood celebrities, cavier fired directly into my mouth via a slingshot made of 24-karat gold, and sexy ladies from all over the globe. However, I know Anne, the GM, would not stand for any of that. So the best I can expect is beautiful people, champagne, good music, and a cool summer breeze on the roof deck overlooking the Huangpu river. It's a jump-off to the rest of the night! I'll probably move on to the STD New Pants show and maybe end up at Back to the Classics at Shelter. Shelter's just around the corner from my apt so its too easy.

Saturday afternoon, I'll wake up just in time to make it to the weekly bball game organized by my coworkers. I'm a Sub (less commitment) but don't doubt my skillz. They don't call me Sky Lai for nuthin. I walk straight from the entrance onto the court and score 51 points, in 10 minutes, all the while nursing a hangover. Then I bounce immediately, leaving my teammates' to scrape their jaws off the floor. Don't fake the funk on the nasty dunk!

I'm stoked for Saturday night. Kamikaze and I are doing a new party at Dada called Clap Clap. If you've ever been to one of our Wasted Shanghai Youth parties at Logo then you know the deal. It's a dance-your pants off kinda party. For Clap Clap, we're going to keep the vibe consistent but rather than electro, we're playing Hip Hop all night. Still, that doesn't mean we're not going to drop some Curtis Mayfield followed by Akon. I know I know, that's not even Hip Hop right, but yo Hip Hop's a state of mind #nawhaddamean!?

Funny story, my partner in crime originally wanted to call the party, "Shoes." He was so excited that he called me at 3am on a Monday night:

"Dude, i thought of a genius name for the party"
"Uhhh...It's 3am! What is it?"
"Shoes!"
"Shoes? What do you mean? That's it? I don't get it"
"It's a State of Mind"

True story.

Finally, Sunday finally rolls around. I might get on my bike and ride the great XLB bike tour. Or ride to the vintage camera market. Shit, maybe I'll get on my bike and just ride. Sunday is a day where you should be able to do whatever you want. If you wanna stay at home in your boxers and watch DVD's all day, you should. If you wanna go eat dimsum while getting a foot massage, you should. If you wanna pay 150 RMB for overcooked scrambled eggs, burnt toast, and one limp, shriveled sausage, no one is stopping you!

In the evening I go to my friend Jenn’s to play some videogames. Then we go to some obscure dumpling place south of Gubei just so she can be the mayor on Foursquare. Of course the food is terrible. I gotta give props to Jenn though. She just attained her 57th mayorship. Here are her last three mayorships (in actual order): "walking my cat", "level5 of mini ninjas videogame", "indigestion clinic on wulumuqi."

Anyway, I have a feeling it's going to be a great weekend. See ya on the dancefloor!
