[My Weekender] with David Lin

Jul 9th, 2010

David Lin plays music under the name The Uhhh, among other things. This Sunday him and his Ice Cream Truck are doing a pool party at Mandarin City Pool. Starts 11:30am -- postponed to the following Sunday in case of rain. Game on.

Friday will mark a quarter-century for me on this little blue dot. I really have no idea what I'll be doing although I'm sure it will involve booze and friends, maybe some clowns and balloon animals too, if I'm lucky. And by balloon animals, I mean strippers.

Too much going on this Friday night... I'd love to get trippy with Magic Garden, and I'll probably wander around Xingfu Lu drinking sparkling champagne out of a can before I catch Mau Mau play at Dada. It's my birthday, so I drinks what I want. Then, maybe some late night bear disco action with the Acid Pony boys at Shiva.

Saturday begins with a stroll down Wulumuqi to the local steamed bun place. Three pork buns and an icy cold soy milk is the perfect way to soak up all that canned Rosé from the night before. I'll probably end up ordering a Mexican pizza from Pizza To Go on top of that. I'm a fat man living in a slightly less fat man's body.

I'll work on my facial hair for a few hours in preparation for Sunday. My friends promise mustaches for the pool party. I can't grow one, so I'll be prepping the neck beard. Neck beards will be the shit in '11. Trust me.

After that, I'll try to sneak into the ridiculous members only swimming pool in my complex. Even though I'm from LA, the baoan think I'm local Chinese, so they'll just beat me down if I'm not careful. All the while, I'll be checking weather reports for Sunday. I know "makin' it rain" may be super cool in the hip hop world, but it's not very cool when it comes to pool parties. If anyone knows how to NOT make it rain, I kindly ask you to perform a reverse rain dance for Sunday. Let's hope the sun will shine in all her drunken pool party goodness.

Sunday, Sunday, Sunday. My favorite day (as long as it doesn't rain). Normally, Sunday is when I go to brunch with all my model friends. We'll chat, sip mimosas, smoke skinny cigarettes, eat Toblerone, and talk shit about our friends who aren't models. However, this Sunday will be a little different. This Sunday will be spent getting shwasted at the swim-up bar of the gigantic Vegas-style pool at Mandarine City, hanging out with girls in bikinis, and dancing to some dirrrty bass. (This may, in fact, beat my usual Sunday routine) Day drinking is still hugely underrated in Shanghai, and looked down upon in many circles. These circles are not for me.

This will be the first pool party for The Ice Cream Truck, the party squadron I started in Shanghai when I arrived last year, and hopefully not the last. If you've been to the rooftop parties at Atanu (the Bund lighthouse) the last couple months, then you may have an idea what to expect at our pool party.

If you haven't been to an Ice Cream Truck party, how do I explain? We take all the fun messiness of underground club parties and bring them outdoors, under the sun. If I had to describe our parties in three words: Crazy, sexy, cool (thanks TLC).

Hope to see you all by the pool. Don't forget your floaties!
