Jenn Wong is: an account executive an Wieden+Kennedy, a fairly regular resident DJ for Heart Attack (an Indie Night at Not Me), and a blogger. She is also very short.
It's a pretty good week to be asked to write the Weekender, not only is this my first weekend back in Shanghai after a couple weeks abroad (I was in Canada, and it was fucking SNOWING), it's also one of the busiest. People, there is a lot of shit going down this weekend.
So I'm kind of bummed that the Weekender only goes out on Fridays, as today is Thursday and it's the launch of my friend Rodney Evan's photography show at the Foundry (Shanxi Bei Lu near Kanding Lu). By the time you read this, the fun, fun opening party slash reception will have already happened, but you should still go to the gallery and check out the work! The show is called 'Postcard' and it runs till Nov. 29th -- it consists of 4 solid years worth of travel photos taken at some of China's most famous (and crowded) tourist sites, slapped together to the result of an interesting + beautiful photo exhibit.
On Friday, I'm flying to Guangzhou to attend the Nike Human Race, which actually happens bright and early on Saturday morning. I'm not running the race, but I do work at Nike's advertising agency and we're there to help out -- this is the third such race I've been to in the past two months, and it's always pretty exhilarating to get to watch thousands of Chinese kids (and adults) sweat through a 10k dash. For those of you in Shanghai, maybe you should go to that S.T.D./Eli Smith show! Little known fact about Eli Smith -- he used to be in this band managed by Eva Mendes. You know, the hot one? Kind of reaching near middle aged but still impossibly young looking and attractive because she's rich and IN HOLLYWOOD. She is also vaguely Hispanic, and though I'm not exactly sure what she's famous for (she's an actress?) or why she's in my readily available general knowledge bank, the show will be great crazy electro and dancing and my buddies Reggie + Kidplastik are DJing before and after.
On Saturday, my plane from Guangzhou lands in Shanghai, and after dropping my bags off at home from the airport, my friends and I are off to host the 2nd round of BADTASTIC -- dubiously known as Shanghai's worst ever party. It's cheap, cheap drink specials and dancing at Not Me, and loads of fun people who come out to get trashed. There are 7 of us DJ'ing this time around, (nevermind that most of us aren't actually "real" DJs and just muck about with Serato, decks and iTunes) and we'll be playing a mix of Electro, Indie Rock, golden age Hip Hop, Donk, Heavy Metal, Power Ballads, Top 40 guilty pleasures, er.... whatever, you get the point. We play shit you wanna dance to, and all your friends will be there. Yayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy.
ps. Also on Saturday + Sunday, there's this thing called "Search for Creative City" that Neocha's putting on way the hell out near Fudan University. It's some kind of flea market slash creative gathering, cool Chinese kids selling their shit (think DIY, arts & crafts, etc) as well as a live bands (Duck Fight Goose and Self Party, to name a few) and graffiti and and and. And?! Also on Saturday at Art+Shanghai, Ben Hogue is doing a performance w/visual artist Cindy Ng -- can you handle it?!
So much going onnnnn this weekend, I wanna do it all!
