[My Weekender] with DJ Sacco

Feb 26th, 2010

DJ Sacco beat juggles chart toppers and heart stoppers at the following parties: The Beat (Wednesdays @ Dada), Teenage Kicks (one Thursday a month at The Shelter), Italo Disco (random Saturdays @ Shanghai Studio), Pussy Lounge (random Fridays at Shanghai Studio), ummm... what else... Indie HeartAttack (one Thurs. a month @ Not Me), a Crunk party (one glorious time @ C’s), Mod Party (off and on at LOgO), Santo’s Sunday Disco at Dada (pinch hitting for Santo when he was on holiday), and... one time at Club MAO before he was summarily ejected. Can't remember what that one was called. But it was real good.

Ahhhh the "My Weekender" column...

Boring, self-indulgent drivel whose purpose is probably that the SmartShanghai writers can slag off on creating original content.

But of course I'll do it because it gives me the opportunity to talk about myself and pump all my own shit. Enjoy!

Friday, Feb 26: I'm on the third day of a serious bender. Wednesday was my monthly fashion party, Thursday I played the PETA Party and Teenage Kicks at Shelter.

I wake up around 2pm to my dog Shamus complaining about his lack of food and yard time. As per the usual ritual, I check my internet download manager and see what new music the blog fairy has left over night. Today I'm blessed with a Cambodian Psych Rock compilation from Aquarium Drunkard.

After a listen I head to the corner of Fahauzhen Lu and Yangzhai Lu for a special treat. There is a window stand that sells a whole marinated chicken, flash deep fried in the nectar of gods for around 16rmb. I hit up my Uyghur friends for 2rmb Rice and Nan to complete the breakfast of champions. Finally, I give Shamus the chicken's head and feet as they creep me out.

Tonight, I'm heading to the Holy Ghost! show. When visiting the uptown clubs I like to immerse myself in their culture and traditions. Tonight, I'm going to be an importer / exporter from Long Island called Art Vandaley. Throughout the evening, my conversation will be peppered with insights on how brutal the third quarter was, the sorry state of the dollar, the condo market in San Francisco, and how hard it is to find good help.

Saturday Feb 27: It's here. I'm fucking 30 today. The night starts off with the traditional white person celebratory dinner: all-you-can-eat Teppanyaki.

What the fuck, white people? Get more creative.

Then we scoot on down to MAO Livehouse to catch my favorite Chinese punk band AV Okubo.

Nothing says "grown up" like brown bagging some tall boys to a show with a few hundred 15 year olds. My final destination is Shanghai Studio where I’m DJ'ing a Lesbian-themed Lesbian party called "Lady Fingers". Shanghai Studio is my favorite club in town. It's a place where a man's man can just be a man. Tonight I've booked Anita Schanz and the Dudettes to perform live.

Since it's my birthday, I'll DJ whatever my heart desires, which will be, most likely, Lady GaGa and Rhinina back to back, over and over and over. There is a 95% chance I will be taking my clothes off so please, if you can’t handle sexy, do not come.

Sunday Feb 28: A year older but none the wiser, I kindly ask whoever is sharing my bed to leave, order Hello Pizza , and watch 90210 until next Wednesday. The only human communication I'll have is a mass text from Santo Chino pleading with people to come to his Sunday Disco.

It’s that text that gets me through.
